Gotham FC Eyes First NWSL Shield in Club History on Decision Day

By David Macaulay-Smith

Gotham FC have an opportunity to make club history when it hosts Utah Royals FC on Sunday in its 2026 regular-season finale, with a win or draw securing the first NWSL Shield in franchise history. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Gotham (17-5-7, 58 points) enters Decision Day atop the NWSL standings, holding a three-point advantage over second-place San Diego Wave FC. The Shield, awarded to the team that finishes first in the regular-season standings, would mark another major milestone for a club that has established itself among the league’s top teams in recent seasons. A victory or draw against Utah would guarantee Gotham the regular-season title regardless of other results.

The Bats head into the regular-season finale following a 2-1 road victory over the Orlando Pride last Sunday. The victory allowed Gotham to maintain its position at the top of the standings with one match remaining and put the club within reach of its first Shield.

Head coach Juan Carlos Amorós described Sunday’s opportunity as a special moment for everyone involved with the club, recognizing the work of the players, staff and supporters throughout the season.

“It’s a special day; it’s a special moment. It feels rewarding after so much work that everyone behind the scenes has put in, players first and foremost, staff,” Amorós said. “I think everyone has worked incredibly hard to get to this point and now, with our fans, we are doing everything in our hands to go out there, to be ourselves, to play the game and to win the game hopefully to get that Shield, which is obviously the last trophy that this club hasn’t won on top of the FIFA Club World Cup.”

Defender Mandy Freeman echoed the importance of the opportunity, explaining that finishing atop the standings has been a goal for the team since the conclusion of last season.

“I think it’s really important. It’s a goal. It’s been a goal of ours since the end of last season that we want to finish top of the table,” Freeman said. “It was going to take everybody, and it was going to take a year’s worth of work, day in and day out, getting results throughout every game. And to be able to be in this point where we’re fighting for the Shield is exactly what we’d hoped going into it.”

Amorós also highlighted the winning culture Gotham has built, and the collective effort required to reach this point in the season.

“That’s Gotham. That’s what it says – that in Gotham, we’ve been able to build a culture of winning, where even winning is not enough. We have to do it in a certain way,” Amorós said. “And every player and a staff member that comes into the equation understands that and knows that we need to give an extra percentage on top of that.”

Utah (14-10-5, 47 points) travels to New Jersey sitting sixth in the standings after securing its first playoff berth in club history. The Royals are coming off a 0-0 draw against Seattle Reign FC last Friday, where they earned a point in their final home match of the regular season.

Despite already securing a postseason spot, Utah will have an opportunity to finish its historic campaign on a high note against the league leaders. The Royals have collected 47 points this season, establishing themselves as one of the league’s playoff teams.

Sunday’s matchup will be the second meeting between the clubs this season. Gotham claimed a 3-1 victory over Utah on July 10 at America First Field, overcoming an early deficit after Cece Delzer opened the scoring for the Royals. Esther González scored twice, while Tierna Davidson added the go-ahead goal to help Gotham complete the comeback.

With the regular season coming to a close, Gotham has an opportunity to add another piece of silverware to its collection and secure the top seed heading into the playoffs. A win or draw in front of its home supporters would ensure the club finishes the regular season at the summit of the NWSL standings for the first time in its history.
