EDISON – Even a new sectional format could not stop the St. Thomas Aquinas gymnastics dynasty from capturing another sectional crown. STA scored a 112.650, far outpacing second-place Bridgewater-Raritan’s 106.325, to take home their fourth consecutive and 21st overall sectional title in their home gym.
Supriyha Moore led the way for the Trojans, taking the top spot in the all-around with a 38.100 and placing in the top three in every apparatus, including two first-place finishes. Moore placed first on the vault with a 9.6 and led an STA sweep of the top three places on the floor exercise with an outstanding 9.85.
Moore’s teammate, Sofia Bertocci, finished second on the vault with a 9.425 while B-R’s Alison Lardieri took third with a 9.35.
Pascack Hills’ Kylie DeVincenzo earned top honors on the bars, scoring a 9.325. Lardieri then followed DeVincenzo in second with a 9.3, and Moore rounded out the top three on the apparatus with a 9.25.
Jackson Township’s Julianna During took the top spot on the balance beam with a 9.65. During was followed by Moore and Bertocci in second and third, respectively. Moore scored a 9.4 while Bertocci recorded a 9.35 on the beam.
Alexa Cerchio and Shelby Reno rounded out the STA sweep on the floor. Reno finished in second with a 9.65 while Cerchio took third with a 9.55.
Finishing off the top three in the all-around, Lardieri took second with a 37.400, and Cerchio finished in third with a 37.150.
Rounding the team scores, Marlboro finished in third with a 104.950, Pascack Hills finished in fourth with a 104.450, Jackson Township finished in fifth with a 101.975, Lacey finished in sixth with a 99.925, South Plainfield finished in seventh with a 99.175, and Central Regional finished eighth with 97.700.
With their sectional championship, St. Thomas Aquinas automatically advances to the state team championship on Thursday at Brick Memorial High School, and now holds the distinction of holding more gymnastics sectional championships than any other school in the Garden State.
