MIDDLETOWN – The fourth-ranked Middletown South gymnastics team took first place in a tri-meet that included St. John Vianney and Toms River South, Thursday at Middletown High School South. The Eagles finished with a team score of 109.225 to outpace the top-ranked Lancers, who came in second with a 107.650, and the Indians, who finished third with a 98.775.
Ava Trezza led the way for Midd South, placing first in three of four individual events to earn herself top honors in the all-around with a 38.375. Trezza’s teammate Cameryn Czwakiel also had a good meet, placing second in the all-around with a 35.900, while Toms River South’s Isabella Cox rounded out the top three in the all-around standings with a 35.600.
Middletown South took the top two spots on the vault, with Trezza taking first place with a 9.6 and Czwakiel taking second with a 9.125. Cox took third with a 9.1.
SJV had a strong showing on uneven bars, with Giovannina Beltra and Sierra Vaz finishing in first and third for the Lancers on the event. Beltra recorded a 9.75 to take the top spot while Vaz scored a 9.5 to take third. Trezza notched a 9.55 to finish in second on the bars for Midd South.
Trezza again took home first place on the balance beam for the Eagles with a 9.55. She was followed by Vaz in second, who notched a 9.425, and her St. John Vianney teammate, Kate DeSimone, who rounded out the top three on beam with a 9.2.
Rounding out the meet, Midd South took the top two spots on the floor exercise with Trezza securing first place with a 9.675 and Czwakiel taking second with a 9.25. Cox took third on the floor for the Indians with a 9.2.
With the victory, Middletown South keeps its perfect season alive to improve to 6-0 and will next host Red Bank Catholic and Red Bank Regional on Oct. 7. St. John Vianney takes its first loss of the season to fall to 7-1 and will next host Rumson-Fair Haven on the 30th. Finally, Toms River South falls to 0-4 on the season and will host Toms River East on Sept. 30.
