Montclair State and WPI faced off against each other for the first time in both schools’ history. The Red Hawks came into this game, played against Moravian University on the road, and ended in a 0-0 tie, which was their second tie game of the season. WPI entered this game, also played against Dean. This would be a game as it ended in a tie at 1-1 apiece, which is also their second of the season.
Montclair State would immediately get the scoring started. Only 65 seconds into the game, Kenet Lopez scored a goal after a header assist from Danny Tobon and was also assisted by Carlos Bedoya. WPI tried to tie the game in the 18th minute, but it was stopped by Diesel Fiore. Montclair State’s Kevin Contreras took a shot on goal shortly after that, but it was collected by the WPI Engineers. At the end of the first half, the score was 1-0.
In the 59th minute, Montclair would be in scoring position as Kyle Moore would score right around the goalie for a 2-0 lead, as Danny Tobon would pick up his second assist of the game. Nine minutes later, Kevin Contreras would pick up a loose ball and find Aiden Cummings for the goal and extend the lead for the Red Hawks to 3-0. Montclair would score their final goal in the 79th minute as Hayden McCarthy caused an Engineer turnover, finding Tobon and getting through multiple defenders to score. Tobon scored his fourth goal of the season so far. Fiore caught a save, which secured a 4-0 win for the Red Hawks.
Montclair State remains undefeated on the season with a 4-0-2 record. WPI suffered their first loss of the season as their record is now 2-1-2 on the year. WPI next plays Skidmore at home on Tuesday, September 16, at 7 p.m., while Montclair State next plays Vassar College at home on Saturday, September 20, at 7 p.m.
