The Montclair State men’s soccer team took on Vassar College on Saturday. Coming into this game, the two sides had previously faced off against each other 10 times, with MSU holding a record of 6-3-1 against the Brewers.
Vassar College took down Oneonta on their senior day, winning 3-1, while Montclair State won against WPI last Saturday, 4-0.
Both teams have completely different styles. The Red Hawks are known for their defense and have been putting on a clinic, having allowed only one goal so far this season. Meanwhile, Vassar has scored 15 goals in just five games thus far.
The first half of the game was very physical, with both teams combining for 12 fouls; MSU’s Sebastian Lapczynski received a yellow card in the 10th minute. Both teams also combined for 10 shot attempts, with each team having two shots on goal.
In the second half, the physicality would continue, and the Red Hawks accrued an additional two yellow cards, one from Gabe Mendez in the 55th minute and the other from Hayden McCarthy in the 77th minute. Montclair State had three shots on goal in the half, but could not capitalize on them.
In the 87th minute, a penalty kick was awarded to Montclair State. Lapcynski took the shot for the Red Hawks and put the ball in the back of the net, scoring what would be the game-winning goal for MSU. The goal was Lapcynski’s first collegiate goal, and it would help garner him NJAC player of the week honors.
Vassar College next hosts Springfield College on Tuesday at 4 p.m., while Montclair State next hosts New York University on Wednesday, September 24, at 7 p.m.
