Sluggish in San Diego: Phillies Falter Before the Break

By Jordan Beaudoin

The Phillies did not have the most excellent weekend playing against the San Diego Padres. They ended up losing two out of three games that they played. Now, the Phillies have a lot of work to do over this week during the Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Break. As of right now, the Phillies have held the best record in MLB for a lot of the first half. However, the Phillies began to show signs of fatigue after losing the first two games of this series, but made a comeback by winning the third and final game.

It started Friday night when Ranger Suarez was the starting pitcher, and he gave up three runs in the six and a half innings that he pitched. They opened the weekend with a 4-2 loss. The bullpen and the bats kept quiet throughout most of this game. The Padres took this first game as Manny Machado hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Game two on Saturday was the most frustrating game of the entire weekend. The Phillies lost 5-4. Zack Wheeler pitched for six innings but was tagged for four runs. There was a slight upside when Edmundo Sosa gave the Phillies a brief 4–3 lead with a two-run single in the sixth, but it was short-lived. The Padres struck back quickly, and Machado once again came through. This time, it was a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning that ended up being the difference. The Phillies managed just two hits over the final three innings as their comeback bid fizzled out.

In the last game of this series, they salvaged the finale on Sunday with a 2–1 win behind an outstanding pitching performance from Cristopher Sánchez. The left-hander tossed seven innings of one-run ball, striking out five and walking none. Sánchez improved to 8–2 on the season and gave the Phillies exactly what they needed to avoid entering the break on a sweep.

Bryce Harper doubled to lead off the eighth inning and scored the go-ahead run on J.T. Realmuto’s clutch RBI double. From there, the bullpen, Orion Kerkering and Matt Strahm handled the rest, with Strahm notching his sixth save of the year.

The Phillies enter the All-Star break with a record of 55–41, still clinging to the top spot in the National League (NL) East. But after going just 3–6 in their last nine games, the momentum that carried them through the first half seems to have cooled off. Hopefully, they can take the time during the break to address the areas that need the most attention.

The Phillies will return on Friday and take on the Pittsburgh Pirates. Zack Wheeler is expected to get the ball in Game one as the team looks to regroup and make a strong push through the second half. The Phillies will continue to come out on top if they can just find their way back to it.
