HARRISON — Gotham FC overcame a 22-second deficit to defeat the Kansas City Current 2-1 on Friday night, extending its unbeaten streak to eight games and winning streak to four.

The Bats found themselves behind almost immediately, with Kansas City taking the lead just 22 seconds into the match. Croix Bethune threaded a pass through Gotham’s backline to Amelia White, who chipped Ann-Katrin Berger to give the Current the early advantage.

Despite the difficult start, Gotham quickly settled into the match and found an equalizer in the 13th minute.

Jaedyn Shaw’s free kick into the box took a deflection before falling to Midge Purce, who calmly placed her finish into the bottom-left corner.

The goal was Purce’s third of the season and her third in the last five games.

Gotham’s response was exactly what acting head coach Shaun Harris wanted to see from his team after the early setback.

“We spoke before the game about really trying to make this place a fortress, make it really difficult to come,” Harris said during his post-match press conference. “I think going a goal down so early, the team showed real character and the response, I can’t say highly enough of them. The response that they showed to stick to the game plan, not waver, not break down, and just keep plugging away to get the result.”

Kansas City nearly reclaimed the lead in the 20th minute. Vanessa DiBernardo picked out Haley Hopkins inside the box, and Hopkins brought the ball down before getting a shot away from close range. Berger reacted quickly to make the save and keep the match level.

The match took another turn in the 33rd minute when Kansas City defender Elizabeth Ball appeared to shove Gotham forward Jordynn Dudley to the ground. Ball was initially shown a red card for violent conduct, but the decision was downgraded to a yellow following a VAR review.

Gotham nearly took the lead three minutes later when Sam Kerr found space on the right and delivered a cross toward Rose Lavelle. Lavelle connected with a header, but her attempt sailed over the crossbar.

The Bats would not have to wait much longer for the go-ahead goal.

In the 41st minute, Shaw showed her individual brilliance, breezing past her defender before finding Kerr with a perfectly timed pass. Kerr calmly finished the chance to put Gotham ahead 2-1 heading into halftime.

The goal added another milestone to Kerr’s remarkable career. It was her 80th NWSL regular-season goal, making her the first player in league history to reach the mark. It was also her 31st regular-season goal for Gotham, the most in club history.

For Shaw, the goal was another sign of the chemistry developing between the two attacking players.

“It’s always great to have a world-class player on your team,” Shaw said. “It’s been really fun to just build chemistry with her, and I feel like she’s just always in the right spot, so I don’t even have to look most times. I feel like the chemistry is just growing between really all of us, and especially me and her as well this game.”

Gotham appeared to extend its lead later in the match when Jaelin Howell found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed after officials determined Kerr was in an offside position as she moved toward Howell’s shot.

The Current continued to search for an equalizer, but Gotham’s defense held firm to protect its one-goal advantage.

For captain Tierna Davidson, closing out the match with the lead was another encouraging sign from a Gotham defense that has consistently been among the league’s best.

“We closed out this game under more control than we have in the past with a one-goal lead,” Davidson said. “As a defender, I’m also really happy about that. Overall, just really proud of the effort and the execution from the team today.”

Davidson credited the entire team for its defensive work, emphasizing that Gotham’s ability to limit opponents goes well beyond its backline.

“It’s a full team effort, really,” Davidson said. “The way that we defend, it is not just the back four, the back five. It is truly a full 11 effort. As a defender, I take great pride in that. The backline takes great pride in that. But also, it is from front to back that we require everybody on the team to execute their role really well.”

The victory moves first-place Gotham to 43 points, seven clear of the Washington Spirit. Washington can cut into that advantage Sunday when it faces Angel City FC.

For Gotham, the result was another example of the Bats finding different ways to win, responding to an early setback before holding off one of the league’s strongest attacks to secure their fourth consecutive victory and continue building momentum at the top of the NWSL standings.
