When it comes to the schools themselves Rutgers University and the University of Washington have a nearly identical story. Historically, both are very reputable large state institutions not Big Ten affiliated that have now joined the highly competitive conference in fairly recent times. As for their respective men’s soccer teams, it seems their 2026 campaigns have followed suit, playing out in very similar circumstances. Both teams were unranked going into the season, but there were signs of underlying potential that pointed to each of them achieving success this year.
Rutgers boasts a record of 4-3-1, securing three consecutive ranked wins, with the most impressive being their recent 2-1 victory over #3 Ohio State*. Across those three matches they have also beaten #11 UCLA 3-1 decisively, meaning their Big Ten conference record is 2-0. They now sit atop the table having collected six points from two games along with #2 Indiana and #19 Michigan State. Washington, having played one extra game also picked up an extra win seeing their record improve to 5-3-1. They also have beaten two Big Ten opponents in Penn State (4-2) and #3 Ohio State (4-0) as well, but they have lost a conference match in the process, that being respectably to #2 Indiana (0-2). This leaves them in fourth in the Big Ten standings, just below Rutgers, only adding to the tension of their upcoming clash.
Though the two schools and their respective soccer teams may be quite comparable they are located on entirely opposite ends of the country, meaning when the Scarlet Knights take flight for the Friday match they will be in the air for little over 2,400 miles, making this trip one of the furthest in all of NCAA Division 1 sports. Travel will certainly play a role, but that is not the largest talking point coming in the lead up to the game. That would be the contrast in goal distributions amongst the two squads.
Washington’s leading goalscorer is junior midfielder Zach Ramsey with a staggering 12 goals in their nine total matches thus far. He has also provided two assists on top of his already impressive output tally. Partnering with him in the midfield is Cameron Cruz, currently in his fifth year of collegiate soccer, with his contributions coming in the form of five assists. This exemplifies Washington’s strength in the center of the pitch considering of the 26 goals scored, Cruz and Ramsey have been directly involved in 19. Washington will be looking to leverage the talent of their midfield stars to overcome the challenge of an in-form Scarlet Knights squad.
Emphasis on the term “squad” regarding the in-form Scarlet Knights squad as their season’s success has truly been reliant on the performance of the collective. Unlike Washington, Rutgers does not have a single player on the team with over two goals this season. Instead their scoring has been shared across nine different players with ten players having chipped in with at least one assist. The method to which the Scarlet Knights utilize their entire roster to score will make the task of nullifying potential opportunities difficult for the Huskies. At any moment in the match it will be an arduous task to identify where the next attempt on target will come from.
As for the other end of the pitch, coming into the season defenders Nick Collins and Charlie Kitch were recognized as standouts via the United Soccer Coaches 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Players to Watch list and they have certainly lived up to their expectations. Rutgers has only allowed more than one goal in a game once when they lost 0-2 to #5 Georgetown. The pair of defenders will seek to preserve another clean sheet this season, providing their side with the most straightforward route to victory.
Considering this match could potentially see Washington overtake Rutgers in the Big Ten standings or allow the Scarlet Knights to build a healthy buffer between themselves and the Huskies, the significance of a victory for both schools is monumental. The match will be held on Friday, September 25 at 10:30 p.m. EST (7:30 p.m. local PST) at Husky Soccer Stadium, in Seattle and is guaranteed to be one of the most noteworthy fixtures in the conference so far this season.
