Gotham FC Falls to Denver Summit in first ever meeting

By Ryan Contino

Gotham FC fell 2-0 to Denver Summit in the clubs’ first-ever meeting, as the visitors secured a historic first win.

Denver controlled the tempo early with a high press, limiting Gotham’s chances and keeping the hosts on the defensive throughout most of the first half. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger kept Gotham level with key saves in the 21st and 23rd minutes, including a one-on-one stop against Melissa Kössler.

Gotham’s best opportunity came late in the first half, but the breakthrough never came despite a stronger push before the break.

Second-half substitutions, including Rose Lavelle and Esther González, helped spark more cohesion and attacking pressure, but Denver struck first in the 58th minute. Kössler finished from the right side of the box to make it 1-0. She now has three straight matches with a goal and has started her season strong.

Denver doubled its lead in the 73rd minute when Natasha Flint capitalized on a defensive mistake by goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, sealing the result.

Gotham pushed late with many opportunities in front but couldn’t find the net, suffering its first loss of the season.

They ended the game with 11 shots and 6 corners but couldn’t find a way through to the net.

Denver Summit’s 2-0 victory marks the club’s first win in NWSL history and an early statement against the defending champions.

Denver Summit sits 4th in the table with 4 points while Gotham FC is in 6th with 4 points as well.

Gotham FC returns to action March 29 against the Orlando Pride.
