Gotham FC closes out its three-match West Coast stretch on Sunday with a crucial NWSL matchup against Bay FC at PayPal Park. The contest carries big implications for the playoff race, as Gotham FC (8-6-6, 30 points) enters the match in third place in the league standings. A victory would not only extend their unbeaten run but also solidify their push to clinch a postseason berth. Bay FC (4-10-6, 18 points), meanwhile, sits in 12th and continues to fight to salvage momentum down the stretch.

The storyline is underscored by the loss of midfielder Taryn Torres, who recently suffered her second ACL tear after first injuring the ligament in 2023 preseason. Torres had been working her way back into the squad this season, and while her role was primarily as a depth option, her absence is still a blow for the team. Head coach Juan Carlos Amorós acknowledged the impact of the setback but stressed that it has fueled the squad’s motivation heading into Sunday.

Head Coach Juan Carlos Amorós on Torres’ Injury and Extra Motivation

“If I had to point out something negative, it’s obviously the injury to Taryn. We’re gutted about it because she’s been fantastic for us — a great player and a great person — and you never want to see that happen to anyone. Everyone was affected by it, but it’s also given us extra motivation to perform tomorrow, just as we did in San Diego and Vancouver.”

Offensively, Esther González continues to lead the way for Gotham. She scored her league-leading 13th goal of the season in last week’s 2-0 win over San Diego Wave, with nine of those goals coming on the road — tying her with Sam Kerr as one of only two players in NWSL history to record nine away goals in a single season. New arrival Jaedyn Shaw also made an instant impact, scoring in her debut to become just the fifth player in NWSL history to score in her regular season debuts for two different teams.

Defensively, Gotham has also excelled away from home. Their clean sheet against San Diego was the club’s sixth on the road this season, matching their single season record set last year. In fact, Gotham’s 16 goals allowed in 23 road matches since the start of 2023 is the fewest in the league. Jess Carter has been at the heart of that defensive stability, thriving alongside Emily Sonnett while also helping younger players like Lilly Reale and Kayla Duran integrate into the backline.

Jess Carter on the Road Trip and Motivation

“I can speak for myself — I’m a bit tired. This trip has been pretty crazy, but everyone is definitely motivated for tomorrow. We want to finish this stretch with nine points, including the Vancouver game. Everyone is focused on getting the win tomorrow and then heading back home.”

Amorós has leaned heavily on squad depth to balance the challenges of the NWSL and the Concacaf W Champions Cup, where Gotham remains unbeaten. The Bats earned a 4-1 victory over Vancouver Rise FC Academy on Tuesday, their fifth straight win in all competitions, to stay atop Group B with one match remaining.

Head Coach Juan Carlos Amorós on Balancing Competitions

“We always have a game plan, but it ultimately comes down to the commitment, attitude, and performances of the players who earn minutes in each match. Having a very competitive roster helps us during these difficult stretches. Everyone is pushing their limits, and that’s our strength — we have 24 or 25 players fully ready to compete.”

Carter also spoke to Gotham’s growth and maturity, highlighting how the squad has evolved despite a turbulent start to the season. She believes the team’s mix of experience and young talent has created the foundation for a playoff push.

Jess Carter on the Growth of Gotham FC

“On the pitch, the team’s growth has been great. We had a turbulent start to the season, but I’ve grown in confidence with this group, trying to help lead and share some of my experience, while also continuing to learn from the players around me. With the demands of the league — like these long West Coast trips — I’m still learning a lot, but I’ve really enjoyed the process.”

Sunday’s meeting will be the fourth all-time between Gotham and Bay, with Gotham winning the first three, including a 2-1 comeback earlier this season at Sports Illustrated Stadium. That victory was part of an 8-1-3 run across all competitions since June 13, highlighting the form that has propelled the Bats into third place. Bay FC will look to break that trend behind key players like Penelope Hocking, the team’s leading scorer with five goals, and Racheal Kundananji, who has tallied three goals and three assists this season.

With Gotham aiming to stretch its road form and Bay searching for its first win since June 7, Sunday’s clash sets the stage for another pivotal moment in the playoff race. A win for Gotham would not only cap their road trip with a perfect nine points but also keep them firmly in the hunt for a top playoff seed heading into a three-match homestand.
