COLUMBUS — Gotham FC captured the first trophy of its 2026 campaign Friday night, defeating the Kansas City Current 2-0 to win the club’s first-ever NWSL Challenge Cup behind a disciplined defensive performance and goals from Esther González and Jordynn Dudley.
Facing one of the league’s most dangerous attacking sides, Gotham weathered heavy early pressure from Kansas City and relied on goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger to keep the match scoreless in the opening stages.
Berger was called into action just eight minutes in when Kansas City midfielder Croix Bethune forced a turnover high up the pitch after pressuring defender Tierna Davidson. The loose ball fell dangerously inside the box, but Berger reacted quickly and made herself big to deny the early opportunity with a crucial left-footed save.
Kansas City continued to press aggressively and caused problems for Gotham’s back line throughout the opening half hour, while Gotham’s midfield struggled with several careless turnovers in its first competitive match in nearly a month.
Berger came up with another massive stop in the 30th minute to preserve the deadlock. Temwa Chawinga used her pace to split Gotham’s center backs and found herself one-on-one, but Berger stood tall again and denied the Current star with another game-changing save.
After the match, Davidson pointed to Gotham’s collective defensive discipline as the key to slowing down one of the league’s most dangerous attacking teams.
“It’s having a really strong commitment to concentration,” Davidson said. “These kinds of attackers can take advantage of even a very small lapse in concentration because of how lethal they are. Playing against a team like Kansas City, that’s what’s required for 90 minutes.”
After absorbing sustained pressure, Gotham found its breakthrough late in the first half.
In the 37th minute, midfielder Jaelin Howell was brought down inside the penalty area by Kansas City captain Lo’eau LaBonta, giving the Bats a chance to take the lead from the spot.
González stepped up and calmly sent goalkeeper Marisa Jordan the wrong way, burying her penalty into the bottom left corner for a 1-0 Gotham advantage.
The goal carried even more significance for González, who became Gotham’s all-time leading scorer with 29 goals, surpassing former club star Sam Kerr amid growing speculation linking Kerr with a return to the club.
Heavy rain poured throughout much of the second half, but Gotham’s defensive structure remained organized as the club continued protecting its narrow lead against Kansas City’s relentless attack.
Head coach Juan Carlos Amorós credited his team’s mentality and defensive commitment after limiting one of the NWSL’s highest-scoring teams.
“The way they step onto the pitch every time is with the mentality to win, to attack, to be ourselves and the desire to do that not only on the offensive side but collectively on the defensive side as well,” Amorós said.
Mandy Freeman made her return in the second half, appearing for the first time since Gotham’s victory over AS FAR in the third-place match of the inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup on Feb. 1 after missing time with hamstring issues.
Gotham finally sealed the victory in the 79th minute through rookie forward Dudley.
Dudley applied aggressive pressure high up the field and forced a turnover from defender Kayla Sharples before taking control herself, calmly firing a low finish into the bottom corner to double Gotham’s lead and put the trophy firmly within reach.
The rookie later said the goal was a reflection of the work she has continued putting in early in her professional career.
“This goal, in particular, helps me continue to work hard because it shows that the work is going to pay off,” Dudley said.
The final whistle confirmed a statement victory for Gotham, who limited one of the league’s most explosive offenses while securing another clean sheet in a championship performance.
Amorós praised his side again after the final whistle, highlighting just how impressive Gotham’s defensive consistency has been in recent knockout matches.
“Today we played arguably the best team at scoring goals over the last couple of years, and we were able to really limit their chances and get another clean sheet,” Amorós said. “When Tierna and Mandy were lifting that trophy, it was really a moment of pride because it’s also a trophy that we didn’t have as a club.”
For Dudley, Friday’s victory marked the first trophy of her professional career.
“It’s really exciting to win this first trophy,” Dudley said. “Players like Tierna and all of them have really helped me and all the younger players settle in and keep pushing harder.”
Following Friday’s victory, Gotham returns to regular season play July 4 when the club travels west to face San Diego Wave FC at Snapdragon Stadium.
