A fourth-quarter goal was not enough to overcome two second-quarter Virginia goals as the No. 20 Rutgers field hockey team fell to the No. 5 Cavaliers 2-1 on Sept. 4, 2026.

Laura Loycke scored the goal for the Scarlet Knights, and Martha Goodridge had the assist.  Emily Nicholls made two saves in goal for Rutgers.

Virginia slightly outpaced the Scarlet Knights in shots on goal with a 4-3 edge; however, Rutgers had a 5-2 edge in corners, with Loycke’s goal coming off a corner.

With the loss, Rutgers falls to 1-3 and will host No. 12 Syracuse on Sunday.  Both games are part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge taking place this weekend at Bauer Track and Field and Hockey Complex.
