The Kean University women’s soccer team returned to the win column in dominant fashion Wednesday, shutting out John Jay College, 4-0, at Randall’s Island.
The victory improved the Cougars to (3-3) on the season as Kean controlled the match from the opening whistle, outshooting the Bloodhounds 19-11 and putting 13 shots on target. Goalkeeper Brooke Ginsberg made five saves to record her third shutout of the season.
Carly Gleason put Kean on the board in the fifth minute, finishing a pass from Stephanie Monroe to give the Cougars an early lead. Kean continued to apply pressure before doubling its advantage in the 28th minute, when Natalia Soler scored her third goal of the season off another assist from Monroe.
The Cougars carried the 2-0 lead into halftime and continued to limit John Jay’s opportunities after the break. The Bloodhounds managed just two shots during the first 30 minutes of the second half as Kean’s defense kept control of the match.
Kean added two more goals in a three-minute span late in the second half. Olivia Cusick found the back of the net in the 75th minute to push the lead to three before Katelyn Greiner capped the scoring in the 77th minute.
Gleason and Greiner led the Cougars with four shots apiece, while Monroe recorded two assists. John Jay was led by Annmarie Russo with four shots.
Ginsberg and the Kean defense kept the Bloodhounds off the scoreboard to secure the Cougars’ third clean sheet of the season.
The Cougars will return home Saturday for the Joe Colodne Memorial Game against Brooklyn College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
