Leading by Example: Nico Hischier’s Role in Shaping the Devils’ Future

The New Jersey Devils captain, Nico Hischier held the title of being the leading goal scorer in the NHL since October 27th when the Devils played the Anaheim Ducks. Hischier is now tied for first with the Montreal Canadiens’ star, Cole Caulfield. This year, Hischier has also become the first NHL player to reach 10 goals in the season.

Hischier has played all 12 consecutive games since the season began and is currently on a four-game scoring streak. Hischier’s first goal of the 2024-25 season was against the Buffalo Sabres in Czechia, for the Global Series. Bringing home a clean sweep and an encouraging team victory to start up the season.

Ever since Hischier was drafted first overall at the 2017 NHL Draft, he has been a well-equipped and a hard-working player that always shows up for his team. Nico Hischier became the New Jersey Devils Captain in 2021 and from there on until now, he has led the team. In total, Nico Hischier has played 465 career games, including playoff games (2017-2018 & 2022-2023) and in total has scored 146 goals and assisted 222 times. 

This past hockey season (2023-2024), Nico Hischier scored 27 goals and made 40 assists. Of those twenty-seven goals and forty assists, six of them were power play goals and 11 were power play assists. Including his four game-winning goals. 

As Nico Hischier is the Devils captain, he has continuously proven his strengths and that he is an effective leader that wants to lead his team to success. Hischier is a well-respected and dependable captain. Hischier is the type of Captain that will give his all until the final buzzer. This year, Hischier has already put up 15 points in 13 games. 

Just recently, the New Jersey Devils played the Vancouver Canucks. Hischier scored the first goal of the night just 53 seconds into the first period. He later assisted on two goals, the first by Dawson Mercer (short-handed) and the second by Timo Meier, while also blocking three shots. In result, Hischier gave the Devils 3 points that night. The Devils remain first in the league and after a tough start to the season, the Devils are looking to come back fired up.

The New Jersey Devils will take on the Calgary Flames tonight in Canada and then the Edmonton Oilers on Monday before retuning back home. Nico is suspected to have an outbreak of a season, while leading his team and himself to victory.
