SAN JOSE — Midge Purce scored for the second consecutive match, and Gotham FC’s defense delivered another standout performance as the Bats defeated Bay FC 1-0 Wednesday night at PayPal Park, extending their unbeaten streak to five matches.
Purce’s second-minute goal proved to be the difference as Gotham secured another hard-fought road victory as it recorded its league-leading 10th clean sheet of the season.
With Ann-Katrin Berger rested for the second match of Gotham’s three-game road swing, acting head coach Shaun Harris turned to Shelby Hogan for her second start of the season. Hogan answered the call with another clean sheet, while Gotham’s defense once again showed why it has been one of the league’s toughest units to break down.
The Bats could not have asked for a better start.
Just two minutes into the match, Jaedyn Shaw whipped a corner into the penalty area that Jaelin Howell headed back into a dangerous area. The ball fell perfectly to Purce, who calmly slotted her finish past Bay FC goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz to give Gotham an early 1-0 lead.
The goal continued Purce’s recent run of form after she also opened the scoring in Gotham’s 2-2 draw against the Portland Thorns last Friday.
Bay FC looked to respond and thought it had found an equalizer before halftime when Kennedy Fuller found the back of the net. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was disallowed, allowing Gotham to carry its one-goal advantage into the break.
The match became increasingly physical in the second half as both teams battled through heavy challenges and tired legs. Bay FC pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer, while Gotham looked to capitalize on set pieces and counterattacking opportunities.
Gotham nearly doubled its lead in the 67th minute through another dangerous delivery from Shaw. Her corner found Sam Kerr at the back post, and the forward headed the ball back across goal to Tierna Davidson, whose first-time strike forced Silkowitz into an outstanding save.
That proved to be Gotham’s best chance to put the match away, leaving the Bats to defend their slim advantage over the closing stages.
Bay FC continued to press, but Gotham’s back line repeatedly came up with the answers. Jess Carter was especially influential in her 50th NWSL appearance, winning key aerial duels, making timely tackles and helping organize a defense that limited the hosts’ clear-cut opportunities.
“I think tonight Jess had a really good game, and she really showed her class, defending not just off the ball, but on the ball as well,” Harris said. “Making the right decisions, trying to find the connections, and really calming the team down in certain areas and recognizing the different momentums of the game. She’s a world-class player, and it’s something that we really rely on, especially when the game is tight.”
Hogan also made the most of her opportunity, recording her second clean sheet of the season after stepping into the starting lineup.
“Shelby was excellent,” Harris added. “First game for a while and we just gave her some really clear, simple instructions and ultimately we know what her strengths are and just making sure that she understands certain situations in the game.
“She executed the game plan really well in terms of what we asked her to do. It’s really, really good to see players come in and get minutes and get a positive performance, so we’re really happy with Shelby. She’s always training hard, working hard, and she deserved the opportunity.”
The night also marked the return of midfielder Taryn Torres, who made her first appearance since tearing her ACL in September 2025. Torres entered late in the match, completing a lengthy rehabilitation and providing another positive moment for Gotham.
Reflecting on the performance, Harris said the early goal and disciplined defensive effort were exactly what Gotham wanted after Friday’s draw against Portland.
“Being on the road, we’re happy to get the three points and the clean sheet,” he said. “That was, first and foremost, the priority, and then we wanted the performance to back it up. I feel like we improved certain areas that we came off the back of last game.”
While Harris was pleased with the overall performance, he acknowledged Gotham still has areas to improve, particularly in front of goal.
“There’s still a couple of things we need to tweak in and around the box,” he said. “We can be a little bit more clinical and then kill the games off. Overall, I’m really happy with the performance and the way they set out. It was really important starting strong, getting the goal and taking control from there.”
The victory capped Gotham’s second straight road clean sheet and kept the club’s strong stretch of form intact. The Bats will wrap up their three-match road swing Saturday against the Houston Dash at Shell Energy Stadium.
