Red Bulls, Union look to reset as MLS resumes after World Cup break

By Ryan Contino

The New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union will return to MLS regular-season action looking to build momentum as the league resumes following a seven-week break for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With both teams having played only about 14 to 15 matches before the extended pause, the second half of the season presents an opportunity for a fresh start. How quickly each team regains its rhythm could play a major role as the playoff race begins to take shape.

For the Union, the restart comes at a critical time. Philadelphia endured a difficult first half of the season, entering the break with a 1-10-4 record and just seven points. The club now has an opportunity to turn its season around. However, it will need to find consistency quickly to climb the standings.

The Red Bulls enter the second half in a much stronger position. New York went into the break with a 6-5-4 record and 22 points, putting the club in the middle of the Eastern Conference playoff race. Now, the focus shifts to whether the Red Bulls can build on that position and turn a solid start into a legitimate postseason push.

New York also enters the second half with plenty of attacking talent. The Red Bulls added Jorge Ruvalcaba and Cade Cowell to a group that already features veterans Emil Forsberg and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The second half will be an important test of whether that group can consistently produce in the final third and help New York climb the Eastern Conference standings.

On paper, the Red Bulls hold a significant advantage based on the teams’ respective records. However, New York cannot afford to overlook a Union team desperate for a turnaround. Playing in Philadelphia could make the matchup even more challenging, as the Union enters the second half with an opportunity to put a disappointing first half behind them and begin a new chapter.

For New York, the challenge will be maintaining its momentum while correcting the inconsistencies that defined parts of the first half. The World Cup break has given the Red Bulls time to reset, get healthy and establish a clear identity heading into the final stretch of the season.

The biggest question entering the matchup may be which team is better prepared to return to regular-season action.
For Philadelphia, the break represents a chance to put a difficult first half behind it and begin climbing back up the standings. For the Red Bulls, it is an opportunity to build on a playoff-position start and establish themselves as a serious postseason contender.

After seven weeks away from MLS action, both teams will be looking to find their rhythm quickly. For the Red Bulls, three points could be another step toward a playoff run. For the Union, a strong result could mark the beginning of a much-needed turnaround.
