The Rutgers Scarlet Knights face their biggest challenge of the young season Friday night when the Scarlet Knights travel to Columbus to take on No. 3 Ohio State at 7 p.m. ET on B1G+.
Rutgers enters the matchup with momentum after a 2-0 shutout victory over Princeton. Abubakar Mayanja and Will Pierce each found the back of the net, while goalkeeper Rafael Ponce De Leon came up with several key saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Now, the Scarlet Knights will look to carry that defensive performance into a much tougher test against one of the nation’s top teams.
Ohio State enters its Big Ten home opener unbeaten and ranked No. 3 nationally. The Buckeyes have also posted the highest goal differential in the Big Ten at plus-17, establishing themselves as one of the conference’s most dangerous attacking teams.
Much of that production has come from senior forward Isaiah Chisolm, who has seven goals this season. Chisolm ranks second in the Big Ten and third nationally in scoring, but his absence could force Ohio State to adjust its attack against Rutgers.
With Chisolm sidelined, sophomore forward Nyle Waugh could see an increased role as the Buckeyes look for someone to provide the same attacking threat.
Ohio State is also working through a significant roster transition. The Buckeyes welcomed 15 new players this season, making their early-season success particularly notable. Friday’s matchup will test how well that group can maintain its chemistry against a disciplined Rutgers defense.
For the Scarlet Knights, the matchup represents an opportunity to make an immediate statement in the Big Ten.
Ponce De Leon will likely play a major role in that effort after his performance against Princeton. Rutgers will need its goalkeeper to remain sharp against an Ohio State attack capable of creating chances quickly and exploiting space in transition.
The Scarlet Knights will also look for opportunities on the counter. If Rutgers can stay organized defensively, withstand Ohio State’s early pressure and capitalize when the Buckeyes push numbers forward, it could create chances to turn the momentum in its favor.
A win in Columbus would give Rutgers a major early-season result and send a message to the rest of the conference. But to do so, the Scarlet Knights will need another disciplined defensive performance and a way to generate offense against one of the nation’s top-ranked teams.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET Friday at Ohio State.
