HARRISON — Gotham FC’s playoff push stalled Saturday night in a frustrating 0-0 draw against the Utah Royals at Sports Illustrated Stadium, as the Bats created the better chances but failed to find a breakthrough.
The result moved Gotham (5-6-6, 21 points) back into eighth place, the final NWSL playoff spot, but extended its winless stretch since league play resumed following July’s break.
The first half was measured and slow, with neither side gaining control. Possession was even at 50 percent, and Utah was limited to no shots on target, the second straight match in which Gotham kept its opponent from registering a shot on frame before halftime. It was also the third time in four matches that Gotham’s defense accomplished the feat.
After the interval, Gotham seized momentum. Rose Lavelle and Katie Stengel both tested Utah goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn in the opening minutes, and Esther González saw a free header from a corner saved with ease. The Bats pushed forward with intent, piling up 54 percent possession and 15 shots in the second half alone, but McGlynn’s seven saves ultimately kept her former club scoreless.
Despite the frustrations in front of goal, Gotham continued to showcase defensive strength. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger tied the club career clean sheet record with her 14th in her 38th game, tying Brittany Cameron (45 games) and Kailen Sheridan (80 games) for the club’s all-time clean sheet record. Gotham allowed just one shot on target in the entire match, highlighting its control at the back.
Midfielder Jaelin Howell led the way with 11 ball recoveries, the most of any player on the field, while defender Jess Carter posted a game-high five interceptions. Gotham also quadrupled Utah’s box entries (44-11) and earned 11 corners to the visitors’ one, but statistical dominance failed to translate into three points.
“We need to play better than what we did in that first half,” coach Juan Carlos Amorós said. “The second half shows who we are, but you cannot play only half of the games at your best, apart from scoring. At the end, very good job – again, we created enough chances to win the game in the second half, but we didn’t. We need to look at that part of the finishing, and then we need to look at the first half in general, because I think we are better than that performance. We’ve played three games in six days – it’s demanding – but we are better than that first half.”
Midfielder Lavelle echoed the frustration, noting the contrast between the halves. “We’re a little disappointed — we didn’t come out strong in the first half, although we picked it up in the second,” she said.
Gotham will now turn its attention to a critical road trip, traveling to Florida to face the Orlando Pride on Friday night in another pivotal clash in the playoff race.
