Shaw’s Goal Not Enough as Kansas City Holds Off Gotham FC

By David Macaulay-Smith

KANSAS CITY — Gotham FC showed attacking promise and briefly held a lead, but two costly moments proved decisive in a 2-1 loss to the Kansas City Current on Saturday afternoon at CPKC Stadium.

The Bats entered the match looking to break out of a scoring slump and showed early signs of energy, but Kansas City threatened first when Kayla Sharples struck the crossbar in the fifth minute, forcing the visitors to stay organized defensively from the opening stages.

The match took another turn in the 18th minute when defender Kayla Duran was forced to exit with a suspected knee injury, prompting a defensive reshuffle and testing Gotham’s ability to adjust on the fly. Despite that disruption, Gotham began to find rhythm in possession, which led to the opening goal in the 29th minute.

Savannah McCaskill found Jaedyn Shaw in space just outside the penalty area, and Shaw turned sharply before sending a low right-footed strike into the bottom-right corner to give Gotham a 1-0 lead, marking the club’s second goal of the season, ending a three-match scoreless stretch.

“I missed the last few games, so to come back and help the team in some way is always the goal,” Shaw said. “For me to be able to score is nice, especially coming off an injury. It was good to score, but it was a tough game.”

Kansas City responded before halftime, capitalizing on a loose ball in the box as Debinha finished from close range in the 37th minute to level the match.

Gotham continued to create chances heading into the break, including a header from Esther González that was saved and another effort from Shaw that drifted just over the crossbar, signaling a more active and confident attacking presence.

The decisive moment came in the second half, when a turnover in Gotham’s defensive third allowed Kansas City to transition quickly, catching the visitors out of position. Michelle Cooper finished the sequence in the 60th minute to give the Current a 2-1 advantage.

“We improved in areas we worked on from the last couple of games, especially getting more chances in and around the box,” acting head coach Shaun Harris said. “We had lapses in concentration in two key moments and were punished for it.”

Trailing for the final half hour, Gotham committed numbers forward and sustained attacking pressure, generating multiple opportunities in and around the penalty area, but the team was unable to find the finishing touch needed to equalize.

A late attempt in stoppage time forced a save, but Kansas City remained organized and held on for the win.

“They’re a disciplined team in their organization,” defender Jess Carter said. “If you don’t defend properly, don’t manage transitions well and don’t set up quickly enough, they will punish you.”

Gotham finished with 15 shots and 1.3 expected goals in a performance that reflected improved chance creation, but the loss extended the club’s winless streak to four matches heading into the international break.

The team will return to action April 25 at Sports Illustrated Stadium against Bay FC.
