Somerset Patriots Look To Make Improvements After Going 3-9 in Last Two Series

By Taylor Schauble

The Somerset Patriots must look to make improvements ahead of their upcoming series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. After going 3-9 in their last two series, a change needs to be made.

The Patriots have been struggling the whole month of August. Within this month, they suffered 17 losses, while only winning 11 games. This left them with a win percentage of only 39 percent. Although it could be considered that the opponents they faced this month could’ve just been stronger and more prepared, the Patriots have previously conquered all of these teams various other times.

In a previous six-game series against the Hartford Yard Goats (August 19-24), they were only able to pull out one win. In this series, they let up a total of 22 runs, while only scoring 14. This was only one reason for their many defeats that week.

Similarly, a few days after they began their matchups against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, they suffered a similar fate. The Patriots earned two wins in that series and lost four games, adding to their already suffering record. Once again, one of the largest contributors to these struggles was allowing 31 runs and earning only 20 in return.

Despite the team’s struggles lately, they have managed to uphold a record of 64-62. This gives their win percentage an overall rating of .509, which is impressive when compared to their recent record. These statistics currently have them standing second in the Double-A Eastern League, Northeast Division.

What’s next for the Patriots?

After a quick break for Labor Day, they will soon face the Fisher Cats once again, their series beginning tomorrow, September 2. This upcoming week could be a good one for Somerset, as their last series against New Hampshire had them coming home with five out of six possible victories.

Currently, the Fisher Cats stand fifth in the league, ahead of the Reading Fighting Phils in last. They trail behind the Portland Sea Dogs in fourth, and the Patriots in third. With such tight rankings, this upcoming series between the Patriots and Fisher Cats could shake up the current standings.

Can the Patriots break out of this slump, or will they continue to struggle? With only two series left in their season, it’s crunch time, and a few more wins is the only way they can end their season with a bang. Watch the Patriots in one of their last games this season against the Fisher Cats tomorrow at 6:35 pm EST.
