Last week, I put out a simple request to the Yankees: Let the kids play.
Now, the Yankees have answered the call.
New York is promoting their top prospect George Lombard Jr. to the major leagues, giving the 21-year-old an opportunity to make his debut Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals at Yankee Stadium.
The move is exciting on its own, but the timing is especially significant. It comes one day after a trade deadline in which general manager Brian Cashman added 1B/DH Luis García Jr. and OF Heliot Ramos but did not acquire an established shortstop.
Cashman said the Yankees explored potential infield upgrades but did not find a deal that cleared what he described as a high bar.
“I don’t think there were a lot of opportunities that existed that were upgrades for us,” Cashman said.
No major league shortstops were moved anywhere across the league. With limited options available and Lombard looming in Triple-A, the Yankees ultimately determined that their best answer might already be inside the organization.
Lombard Earned His Opportunity
The Yankees selected Lombard with the 26th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. The son of former major leaguer and current Detroit Tigers bench coach George Lombard Sr., he is now ranked as New York’s No. 1 prospect and the No. 20 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline.
Across the minor leagues this season, Lombard has batted .284 with a .411 on-base percentage, a .498 slugging percentage and a .909 OPS. He has added 12 home runs, 33 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.
The young shortstop has been especially impressive recently. Since returning from two sprained fingers in mid-July, Lombard has hit .377 with a 1.081 OPS over 14 Triple-A games. That offensive surge made it increasingly difficult for the Yankees to keep him in the minors.
His promotion is not simply a reaction to one hot stretch. Lombard is regarded as a polished defender with speed, power and an advanced understanding of the strike zone. The Yankees also made it clear at the deadline that they were not interested in surrendering him.
Lombard has also shown he is not intimidated by major league-caliber pitching. On April 19, he launched a 104.8 mph home run to dead center off Phillies ace Zack Wheeler during Wheeler’s rehab start with Double-A Reading. It was Lombard’s second matchup with Wheeler in five days after he doubled off the two-time Cy Young runner-up in their first meeting. For a young hitter preparing for the next level, there are few better signs than looking comfortable against one of baseball’s most accomplished pitchers.
The Volpe Era Reaches a Crossroads
Lombard’s arrival also signals that the Yankees could no longer wait indefinitely for Anthony Volpe to establish himself as their long-term answer at shortstop.
Volpe earned the starting job out of spring training and made his major league debut on Opening Day, March 30, 2023. From that day through his latest demotion, he has batted .224 with a .660 OPS.
There were positive moments, including a Gold Glove Award as a rookie and a strong showing during the Yankees’ 2024 postseason run. However, the consistent offensive breakthrough the Yankees hoped to see never arrived.
Volpe struggled considerably in 2025, batting .212 with a .663 OPS, the fourth-worst mark among MLB shortstops.
The Yankees gave him another opportunity this season after he recovered from offseason shoulder surgery. José Caballero initially kept the position when Volpe completed his rehab assignment, but Volpe returned after Caballero suffered a small finger fracture. Neither player ultimately took complete control of the job.
Volpe and Jasson Domínguez were optioned to Triple-A following Monday’s loss to the Cardinals, creating roster space for Lombard and Ramos. Manager Aaron Boone also told Talkin’ Yanks Volpe will receive work at second base in addition to shortstop at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, potentially providing him with another route back to the majors.
Let The Kid Play
Calling up a 21-year-old prospect during a postseason race comes with risk. Lombard should not be expected to immediately fix every issue the Yankees have experienced at shortstop.
But he does not need to be a finished product on Day 1.
The Yankees need to give him enough runway to adjust, learn and show whether he can become part of their postseason plans. After failing to find an outside solution at the deadline, they are finally turning to the player who may have been their long-term answer all along.
Yankee fans asked the organization to let the kids play.
Now, it’s time for the kid to prove the future can’t wait.
