Gotham FC has continued to find ways to win during one of the busiest stretches of its season. Now, the Bats will look to finish their road trip with another result when they face the Houston Dash on Saturday.
Gotham (10-3-4) enters the matchup second in the NWSL standings after extending its unbeaten streak to five matches with a 1-0 victory over Bay FC on Wednesday. Midge Purce’s early goal proved to be the difference, while Gotham’s defense recorded another clean sheet to secure three more points.
The win marked Gotham’s 10th victory of the season and continued a strong run of form during a challenging July schedule. The Bats have had to navigate this difficult stretch with injuries to key players, including defender Emily Sonnett, who was ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury against the Portland Thorns. Gotham is also dealing with uncertainty surrounding midfielder Denise O’Sullivan, who suffered an injury during a training session earlier this week.
“It was in one of the training sessions. It was like a freak accident,” acting head coach Shaun Harris said during Thursday’s prematch press conference. “I’m not sure what the extent of the injury is.”
Despite the setbacks, Gotham have continued to find results through contributions across the roster and remains near the top of the NWSL standings.
“We know the situation we’re in, and the reality is everyone is just kind of coming together, making sure we’re sticking to what we can do,” Harris said. “Obviously the injury stuff is out of our control, but it’s making sure that we can control what we can control and keep believing in the process.”
“If we can get another win, it’ll really show the character and the depth of this team to be able to get through anything,” Harris said. “That’s one of the keys to being a championship team.”
Standing in Gotham’s way is a Houston side coming off a victory of its own. The Dash (5-7-4) sit 12th in the NWSL standings after earning a 1-0 win over Bay FC in their last match, with Linda Ullmark scoring a 91st-minute winner to secure all three points.
Saturday’s matchup will be the second meeting between the two teams this season. Gotham defeated Houston 1-0 on May 31 after rookie Jordynn Dudley scored a spectacular goal to give the Bats the victory.
Harris expects another difficult test from the Dash, who have a young core and dangerous attacking players capable of creating chances in transition. For Gotham, controlling possession and dictating the tempo will be key against a Houston side that can quickly turn defensive stops into attacking opportunities.
“For us, just really controlling the ball, making sure that they can’t dictate any of their play,” Harris said. “Obviously with the heat, if we can just control and decide when we’re gonna go, when we’re going to keep it and just possess and move the ball, switch the play, that’s really going to be the key.”
The Bats will also look to be more clinical in front of goal while limiting Houston’s opportunities on the counterattack.
“Can we try and make sure we’re clinical in and around the box and just prevent any transition?” Harris said. “They’ve got really fast players up top, so we’ll be ready to make sure we nullify any threats going forward for them.”
For Gotham, Saturday’s match represents the final challenge of a three-game week and another opportunity to strengthen its position near the top of the standings.
Winger Andrea Kitahata said the team has embraced the difficult schedule and understands the importance of ending the road trip on a positive note.
“We’ll play anyone, anywhere,” Kitahata said. “It’s been a three-game week, so definitely preparing in the best way possible. Houston’s got home-field advantage and they’re a great side. Really, really strong young core.”
Kitahata added that Gotham remains focused on finishing the road trip strongly while continuing its pursuit of the NWSL Shield.
“We’re prepared, and we really want to wrap up this road trip on a high, in a really good position to keep fighting for that Shield,” Kitahata said. “That’s what we’ve got our eyes on in these last few weeks to months of the season.”
After another demanding week, Gotham will look to leave Houston with another strong performance and extend the momentum it has built throughout July.
