Gotham FC heads west Friday night for one of the marquee matchups of the NWSL weekend, visiting Portland Thorns FC at Providence Park with an opportunity to continue its recent run of form and remain firmly in the race for the NWSL Shield.
Kickoff is set for 10 p.m. ET.
Friday’s match is the first of Juan Carlos Amorós’ five-week parental leave, with lead assistant Shaun Harris serving as acting head coach during his absence.
Gotham FC (9-3-3, 30 points) enters the weekend level on points with the first-place Washington Spirit, trailing only on goal difference at the halfway point of the regular season. The Bats have won four of their last five league matches, including each of their last three, and another positive result would keep them among the league’s top contenders heading into the second half of the season.
The club is coming off one of the most dramatic victories in its history.
Trailing Seattle Reign FC 2-0 at halftime last Saturday, Gotham rallied with three unanswered goals in the final 10 minutes plus stoppage time to earn a 3-2 comeback victory at Icahn Stadium. Esther González scored twice to pull the match level before Rose Lavelle completed the comeback with a stoppage-time winner.
The victory extended Gotham’s winning streak to three matches and continued a strong stretch that has seen the club collect four wins in its last five league contests.
Portland (8-5-3, 27 points) enters Friday’s matchup in fourth place, three points behind Gotham in the standings. The Thorns have dropped each of their last two league matches and have won just two of their last eight contests, most recently falling 2-1 on the road to Denver Summit FC despite a first-half penalty from Sophia Wilson.
Wilson leads Portland with seven goals this season and remains one of the league’s most dangerous attacking threats. Despite its recent results, the Thorns have the talent and experience to challenge any team in the league, making Providence Park another difficult test for Gotham.
“It’s going to be a difficult game,” Harris said. “It’s always difficult coming to Portland and playing in this environment, but at the same time we relish these kinds of moments. The players are really excited to come and play here. The crowd is always good, and it always gives us some interesting problems to solve.”
Harris said the transition within the coaching staff has been supported by the communication and trust established throughout the group, with discussions about Amorós’ absence taking place well before he stepped away.
“The conversations have been quite frequent about how Juan was feeling and balancing his personal life with work,” Harris said. “We all expressed that he needed to make sure he took some time for his family, and we were all super supportive of it.”
“He’s a really important part of the team, but he’s created an environment where everyone can continue following the same processes. We’re really happy that he’s able to do this.”
Having been a key part of Gotham’s coaching staff during the club’s recent success, Harris has earned the trust of the players, and defender Bruninha said the team remains confident with him leading the group from the sideline.
“Nothing changes with our energy or our style,” Bruninha said. “It’s the same, but with his style. I really like Shaun. He’s a good coach, and I’m sure he’ll help us a lot from the sideline over the next few games. I’m excited.”
Gotham will be without Kayla Duran and Taryn Torres, who remain sidelined with season-ending knee injuries. González will miss Friday’s match due to an excused absence, while Jordynn Dudley is listed as questionable with a head injury.
With just three points separating the top four teams entering the weekend, Friday’s match carries significant implications for both clubs. Gotham will look to extend its winning streak and keep pace in the race for the NWSL Shield, while Portland has an opportunity to gain ground on the teams above it in the standings.
