Gotham FC continues its three-match road swing Wednesday night with a trip to PayPal Park to face Bay FC, looking to build on a four-match unbeaten run. Kickoff is set for 10 p.m. ET.
Gotham (9-3-4) enters the match in second place in the NWSL standings after earning a 2-2 draw against the Portland Thorns on Friday night. Midge Purce opened the scoring before Sam Kerr found the back of the net for the first time since returning to the club, helping the Bats extend their unbeaten streak to four matches.
The result continued a strong stretch for Gotham, which has found ways to collect points while navigating a demanding run of matches. Wednesday’s matchup provides another opportunity for the Bats to continue their push near the top of the standings against a Bay FC side looking to get back on track.
Bay FC (5-7-3) enters Wednesday’s match in 14th place after suffering a 1-0 defeat against the Houston Dash. Linda Ullmark scored the game-winning goal in the 91st minute, snapping Bay FC’s three-match unbeaten streak.
The two teams previously met in April, when Gotham earned a 3-0 victory. An own goal from Bay FC defender Karlie Lema opened the scoring before Rose Lavelle and Esther González added goals to secure all three points for the Bats.
However, acting head coach Shaun Harris knows the second meeting will present a different challenge, with Bay FC bringing a dangerous attacking approach that Gotham will need to be prepared for.
“It’s going to be an interesting game,” Harris said. “They offer some key threats in transition. When we looked at the data, they’re probably the team that spends the most time in transition.”
Bay FC’s ability to quickly turn defensive moments into attacking opportunities has been a major focus for Gotham heading into the match. Harris said limiting turnovers and maintaining control of possession will be important in preventing Bay FC from creating chances in transition.
“They have a lot of strength in transition and they have really quick forwards,” Harris said. “At the same time, we’ve analyzed the areas that we need to get better. As long as we can maintain control of the ball, sustain possession in the key areas and prevent those turnovers, I think that puts us in a good place.”
For Gotham, the challenge will be finding the balance between controlling the match with the ball while remaining disciplined defensively against a Bay FC attack that thrives in open spaces.
The Bats will also look to carry over the strong start they showed against Portland while finding consistency over the full 90 minutes. Harris said the team has emphasized building on that performance and maintaining its level throughout the match.
“We want to start the way we started the last game,” Harris said. “We spoke as a group, and we were really happy with the way we started the game. It’s about whether we can expand that over the 90 minutes.”
With another quick turnaround, Gotham has had limited time to recover and prepare, but midfielder Sofia Cook said the team has remained focused throughout the week.
“We’re feeling pretty good,” Cook said. “The travel can be a little hard sometimes, but we’ve just been putting in that work in training, and we’re really excited to get out there.”
Cook added that the team has spent time reviewing both its previous meeting with Bay FC and the adjustments the opponent has made since that matchup.
“We’ve been reviewing what we did last time on film and what they’ve done leading up to this game,” Cook said. “We’re taking those little things, making sure we have our structure right and being able to expose their weaknesses in attack.”
Gotham will look to continue its unbeaten stretch and build on the momentum it has created over the last month, but Bay FC presents a different challenge with its ability to hurt teams in transition. The Bats will need another disciplined performance to leave PayPal Park with a positive result.
