Gotham FC has bolstered its midfield, announcing the signing of Republic of Ireland international Denise O’Sullivan on an initial one-year loan from Liverpool FC that includes an obligation to make the move permanent.
The 32-year-old returns to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) after spending the first half of 2026 with Liverpool in England’s Women’s Super League (WSL). O’Sullivan brings extensive league experience to Gotham, having established herself as one of the NWSL’s top midfielders during a decade with the Houston Dash and North Carolina Courage.
“I’m incredibly excited to join Gotham FC and return to the NWSL,” O’Sullivan said in a club statement. “This club has established itself as one of the top teams in the world with an incredible culture and ambition to compete for every trophy. I can’t wait to meet my teammates, get to work and do everything I can to help this club continue its success.”
O’Sullivan arrives with an accomplished résumé that includes two NWSL championships, three NWSL Shields and two NWSL Challenge Cup titles. During her 10 seasons in the league, she made 184 regular-season appearances, including 166 starts, while recording five goals and 18 assists.
Most of that success came with the North Carolina Courage, where she became the club’s all-time leader in regular-season appearances (155), starts (147) and minutes played (12,958). She helped the Courage win back-to-back NWSL championships in 2018 and 2019 and three consecutive NWSL Shields from 2017 through 2019 before adding Challenge Cup titles in 2022 and 2023. Her performances earned her NWSL Best XI Second Team honors in 2023.
Gotham president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West said O’Sullivan’s experience and leadership made her an ideal addition to the club’s midfield.

Gotham head coach Juan Carlos Amorós echoed those sentiments, describing O’Sullivan as one of the world’s elite midfielders and praising both her footballing ability and leadership qualities.
“Denise is a player who is one of the best midfielders on the planet – the way she understands and reads the game, it’s something that can bring a lot for the players, for the team, for our fans,” Amorós said. “She’s one of those players around the world of football that probably has been a bit underrated or maybe not getting the credit that she really deserves. She was the heart of a fantastic North Carolina team for a very long time. She’s a leader as well – captain of Ireland, captain of North Carolina – and someone who is always looking to be better. A fantastic human being.”
Amorós also said O’Sullivan’s arrival will increase competition within the squad as Gotham continues to strengthen its roster.
“It’s going to be someone who’s going to add competitiveness. They’re going to compete basically to be able to play because that’s the way we are, and that’s how we want to be – the roster making sure that every player pushes each other and then Denise comes to do that. So, very, very exciting for her signing and another statement from the club and the direction that we want to go now,” Amorós said.
O’Sullivan joins a Gotham side aiming to strengthen its midfield as it continues its pursuit of domestic and international trophies. She is available for selection in Wednesday’s Queens Classic against the Washington Spirit, giving Gotham an immediate boost as it welcomes one of the NWSL’s most accomplished midfielders back to the league.
