Garrett Martin, the 6-foot-3, 217-pound outfielder, is making his mark in Somerset. Martin, in his fourth season of professional baseball, is finally having his breakthrough season. Currently leading the team in home runs with 17, he has truly taken his performance out of the park!
Back in 2018, Martin was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 22nd round and was the 655th pick. Prior to the draft, he chose to skip heading straight into the pros and instead took the collegiate route, playing for both Oklahoma State and Austin Peay State. Throughout his collegiate career, he earned 61 runs and 17 home runs, had a batting average of .315 and a slugging percentage of .653.
Since making his debut in 2023, he has had quite the journey. Martin began with the Tampa Tarpons in 2023, and eventually moved up to the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades. Despite having spent some time in the Arizona Fall League with the Salt River Rafters, he has since had two very successful seasons with the Somerset Patriots.
This year, Martin has racked up tons of impressive stats. So far, he has scored 36 runs, 17 home runs, and a .271 batting average. Across his whole minor league career, he has had 141 runs, 43 home runs, and a batting average of .230. Martin is currently making his mark in Somerset as he is, so far, the only Patriot to have surpassed 15 home runs (with 17). Not only that, but this season he currently holds the most stolen bases with 12, and the most RBI’s with 44. If he keeps on this pace, he is on track to easily surpass 20 home runs and even reach the 30-home-run mark.
With so many guys moving around between the Patriots (AA), RailRiders (AAA), and the Yankees (MLB), the chances of Martin eventually getting pulled up are getting higher and higher. If he keeps up this same level of play and intensity on the field, he is sure to make a statement and draw lots of attention from the Yankees’ radar.
As the Patriots push through some of the toughest games of the season, there will be plenty of eyes on #30 Garrett Martin.
From an underdog drafted in the 22nd round to a Double-A powerhouse, it won’t be long until he’s sporting the iconic Yankees pinstripes in the Bronx.
