The 2026 FIFA World Cup has concluded and as we begin to shift our focus from the global celebration of soccer to our own domestic league in the MLS it is imperative we look into what Red Bull New York can do to optimize their chances of success. The World Cup put a pause on the current MLS season and halted any momentum teams were building up by the end of May. Specifically for the Red Bulls, this disruption could prove to be a momentum hindrance if they are unable to re-establish themselves properly. In their last five matches the Red Bulls were able to produce three wins, one draw, and one loss.
When it comes to scoring Red Bull New York have no issues, their 25 goals for this season ranks them joint fifth among all Eastern Conference teams. This is certainly a direct correlation with their place in the Eastern Conference standings which is also fifth. It appears the other end of the pitch is where they have had most of their struggles thus far. If not for their impressive goal tally, the team would likely find themselves much lower in the standings as they have conceded a total of 32 goals in just 15 matches, averaging just over two goals against per game. This is not sustainable for the rest of the season and defensive solidity must improve if they are determined to establish league dominance.
Looking back at the season prior to the international competition hiatus, another glaring statistic is the similarity in both home and away form. The Red Bulls post a modest set of results (3-3-2) away from home, while their near identical home form of (3-2-2) is slightly less impressive. Granted there are inevitably going to be unavoidable variables within matches that affect their outcomes, but it is much easier to control results at home than it is away. The Red Bulls must lean into their fantastic home support to give them the competitive edge over their opponents who are coming to play at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Being able to establish their home field as a fortress will naturally build confidence and improve their overall record as well as their away performances.
The final key to the Red Bulls building upon their start to the season is to focus on the development of homegrown super star Julian Hall. The Red Bulls have a great history of developing talent, you only have to go as far as looking at the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) roster for this most recent World Cup to see this exemplified. Players such as Tim Ream, Tyler Adams, and Tim Weah all spent time honing their skills right here in New Jersey prior to their international success.
Julian Hall has contributed nine goals and four assists to the team in just 1,285 minutes, which is a goal creating action just under every 100 minutes of soccer played. As well as developing talent, the Red Bulls’ recruitment have always drawn experienced pedigree to New Jersey. The likes of Thierry Henry, the Wright-Phillips brothers, and Juan Pablo Ángel are some of the most exceptional talents that have worn the famous red and white jerseys. Players in the current squad with European and Champions league experience include Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Emil Forsberg. It is imperative that the Red Bulls take advantage of this opportunity to surround Hall with as much soccer expertise as possible so he can develop a strong professional foundation. Given his statistical impact it is clear the team’s success is directly tied to the development of the talented 18 year old.
