By David Macaulay-Smith

Gotham FC defender Emily Sonnett has signed a contract extension through the 2028 season.

Sonnett, 32, joined the Bats ahead of the 2024 campaign and has become one of the club’s most important defensive players, helping anchor one of the strongest back lines in the NWSL over the last two seasons.

During the 2025 season, Sonnett played a major role in Gotham’s defensive success as the club allowed just 25 goals in 26 regular-season matches, the second fewest in the league, while recording a club-record 11 clean sheets. She started all 26 regular-season matches, tying the club’s single-season appearance record while setting a new franchise mark for starts.

Her impact helped Gotham secure a trophy double in 2025, winning both the NWSL Championship and the CONCACAF W Champions Cup.

“I’m really excited to continue with Gotham FC,” Sonnett said. “This is a special group that holds itself to a high standard every day. I’m looking forward to building on what we’ve started here.”

Club president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West praised Sonnett’s impact since arriving at the club.

“Emily has been an essential part of our team’s success,” Averbuch West said. “Her quality, consistency and standard of excellence have been incredibly valuable to our group, and we’re excited to have her continue with Gotham FC.”

Sonnett has continued to play a major role in Gotham boasting the NWSL’s best defensive record during the 2026 season. Through 11 league matches, the Bats have conceded just five goals, the fewest in the league.

She has also remained an important piece for Gotham individually this season, making eight regular-season appearances, including five starts. Sonnett recently surpassed 200 career appearances across all NWSL competitions and reached 15,000 regular-season minutes, adding another milestone to an already accomplished career.

Since joining Gotham, Sonnett has made 77 appearances across all competitions, including 70 starts, totaling 6,317 minutes while contributing four assists. Her performances during the 2025 season earned her NWSL Best XI Second Team honors.

Keeping Sonnett under contract through 2028 allows Gotham to retain one of the league’s most experienced defenders as the club continues building toward competing for more silverware in the years ahead.
