GIANTS ARE THROWING DARTS — Did They Finally Hit the Bullseye?

By Nikki Gist

With rookies reporting to camp this week, veterans arriving July 22, and practice kicking off the day after that — football season is officially back. The New York Giants are looking to put their disastrous 2024 campaign behind them and charge into 2025 with Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson now leading the way.

After a year filled with Daniel Jones drama, the departure of Saquon Barkley, a three-win season, a Hard Knocks appearance that lives in meme infamy, and what looked like a total lack of a plan it’s felt like New York has just been throwing darts at a board hoping something sticks.

But this year? It feels like they might have finally hit the bullseye.

Between a highly graded draft class and a completely overhauled quarterback room — Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, Jaxson Dart, and yes, Tommy DeVito the Giants seem to finally have a strategy.

But for all the depth they’ve built, they now face an even bigger question:

Will we see Jaxson Dart on the field this season?

Well… it’s complicated. Of course. Nothing is ever easy with the Giants.

With Wilson all but officially named the starter, most would assume Dart will be watching from the sidelines. But Wilson doesn’t come without concerns. In both Pittsburgh and Denver, he averaged a 23.35% pressure rate allowed meaning he needs to get the ball out faster. The flip side? His veteran leadership, low turnover rate, and ability to create high-impact plays could finally wake up this Giants offense and help it reach its full potential.

So, where does that leave Dart?

On the bench next to Winston — at least for now. It’s pretty clear the Giants brought Winston in to mentor Dart. While fans are already clamoring for Dart to start, the Giants finally seem to be playing the long game. Letting Dart develop behind two seasoned vets is a smart move and a rare one these days. Too often, teams take the “sink or swim” approach with rookie quarterbacks, then act surprised when it backfires.

Barring injury to both Wilson and Winston or a complete trainwreck of a season I don’t see Dart hitting the field in 2025. And honestly? I’m okay with that. But the real story to watch will be how things unfold during camp.

If the Giants want Dart to see any live action at all this year, they’ll need to bump him to No. 2 on the depth chart. Otherwise, as the emergency QB, he’s ineligible to play unless both Wilson and Winston go down.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that — because we’ve seen that movie before. And we all know how it ends.

Still, the possibility of Dart leapfrogging Winston in the depth chart adds a little extra juice to training camp. And if there’s anything this team needs more of, it’s a little extra zip on the ball to shake things up a bit.
