Gotham FC faces another pivotal test in its playoff push Friday night, visiting an Orlando Pride side dealing with the loss of its top scorer but still firmly in the postseason picture.

Gotham (5-6-6, 21 points) enters the match in eighth place, holding onto the final playoff spot. The Bats have not won since the league resumed play after the July break, going 0-3-1 in that stretch, with a 0-0 draw against the Utah Royals most recently. Despite the results, Gotham’s defensive organization has remained a strength, allowing just 16 goals — among the lowest totals in the league.

Spanish striker Esther González continues to be the focal point in attack, scoring more than half of Gotham’s 20 goals this season with 11. Rookie forward Sarah Schupansky has emerged as the team’s primary creator, tied for the league lead in assists with five. Head coach Juan Carlos Amorós has leaned on a possession-oriented approach, with Gotham building through the midfield and relying on González’s finishing. The challenge has been finding a secondary scorer and converting possession into goals.

Orlando (8-4-5, 28 points) sits in fourth place but enters on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Angel City. The Pride have one of the league’s strongest defenses, conceding only 13 goals, but their attack has been disrupted by the season-ending injury to Barbra Banda. The Zambian forward scored eight goals in 15 games and was central to Orlando’s counterattacking threat.

Without Banda, Marta becomes the key attacking outlet. The 38-year-old Brazilian veteran has three goals this season and will likely operate in a freer role, drifting into pockets to link with teammates. Orlando may look to stretch Gotham with pace out wide, while also keeping its defensive structure intact. Mexican forward Jacquie Ovalle, signed for a world-record fee from Tigres, could make her debut, offering another option in the final third.

The teams last met in March at Sports Illustrated Stadium, where Orlando won 2-0. Gotham controlled possession and had the better xG, but a Lilly Reale own goal and a Marta penalty proved decisive. That performance showed Gotham’s ability to dictate play, but also highlighted their struggle to turn chances into goals — a theme that has lingered into August.

Friday’s matchup could hinge on whether Gotham can break down Orlando’s compact back line, led by center backs Emily Sams and Kylie Strom, and whether the Bats can avoid being punished in transition. For Orlando, finding goals without Banda will be the central question, with Marta likely carrying the load.

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. Friday at Inter&Co Stadium.
