Red Bull New York hosted Nashville SC on Wednesday night August 19 at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Nashville was coming off a 4-1 win against Miami at home and New York was coming off a 2-1 loss against Atlanta on the road. This was the first matchup between both teams this season. The Red Bull New York crowd was ready for the match to get underway.
In the 12th minute of the game Daniel Lovitz was shown the yellow card. Matthew Dos Santos had his shot blocked from the center of the box by Jack Maher. Maher a few minutes later would block another shot attempt from Jorge Ruvalcaba. In the 33rd minute Emil Forsberg missed a shot on goal that had him and his teammates grabbing their heads distraught. Even the flames near the goals went off early in anticipation of the goal. New York and Nashville were tied 0-0 at the end of the first half.
Out of halftime, Hany Mukhtar had a free kick opportunity after being fouled by Ronald Donkor. Julian Hall tried to get the scoring started but his shot went high left. Sam Surridge appeared to score a goal for Nashville but a flag went up. Maxwell Woledzi was caught offside. It would still be 0-0 heading into stoppage time.
Two minutes into stoppage time Woldezi scored the header for the first goal of the game and for the lead. Woledzi celebrated with some of the Nashville fans in the crowd. Cristian Espinoza was awarded the assist for the goal. Nashville SC held on and got the win 1-0.
Both teams were evenly matched in the stat sheet. Red Bull New York had 13 shots and Nashville 11. It was a physical game as well with Nashville committing 12 fouls compared to New York’s four.
Red Bull New York’s record is now 7-4-9 on the season with 25 points. Nashville is 14-4-2 with 46 points. Nashville SC next plays against Columbus at home August 22 at 8:30 pm. New York next plays against Chicago at home August 22 at 7:30 pm. Nashville and New York will face off again November 1 at 4:30 pm in Nashville.
