Red Bull New York begins a crucial three-game homestand Wednesday night when they welcome Eastern Conference-leading Nashville SC to Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET as the Red Bulls look to build momentum during a stretch that could prove important in their push up the Eastern Conference standings.
New York enters the matchup at 7-8-4 with 25 points, while Nashville has emerged as one of Major League Soccer’s top teams, sitting atop the Eastern Conference at 13-2-4 with 43 points.
For the Red Bulls, Wednesday presents an opportunity to make a statement against one of the league’s best teams.
Home Advantage
While Nashville has been dominant this season, New York has historically had the upper hand in this matchup, particularly at home.
The Red Bulls are unbeaten against Nashville at Sports Illustrated Stadium, posting a 2-0-2 record while outscoring Nashville 4-0 across those four meetings. New York also holds a 3-1 advantage in the all-time regular-season series.
That history could provide confidence for a Red Bulls team looking to turn home-field advantage into three points.
Wednesday also marks the beginning of a three-match homestand for New York. Chicago Fire visits Harrison on Saturday before the Philadelphia Union comes to town on Aug. 29, giving the Red Bulls an important opportunity to collect points in front of their home supporters.
New York is 2-1-1 in its last four home matches.
Forsberg Leads the Way
One of the biggest storylines entering the match is the form of Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg.
The Swedish midfielder has scored in consecutive matches and recorded six goal contributions across his last seven MLS appearances. Forsberg also scored in New York’s most recent home victory over Nashville, a 2-0 Red Bulls win.
With 23 MLS goals for the club, Forsberg has climbed into 10th place on the Red Bulls’ all-time MLS scoring list.
His creativity and ability to create in the final third could be especially important against a Nashville side that has been one of the most consistent teams in the conference this season.
A Battle of Styles
The matchup could come down to whether New York can impose its high-energy style on Nashville.
The Red Bulls have traditionally found success by pressing aggressively, forcing turnovers and creating chances in transition. Against a confident Nashville side, that pressure will need to be effective from the opening whistle.
If New York can win the midfield battle and create turnovers in dangerous areas, it could give Forsberg and the Red Bulls’ attack opportunities to exploit Nashville’s defense.
If Nashville is allowed to control the tempo, however, it could make for a difficult night.
Nashville enters Wednesday’s match with plenty of confidence after defeating Inter Miami on Aug. 15, a result that helped the club maintain its position at the top of the Eastern Conference.
A Chance to Make a Statement
The standings suggest a significant gap between the two sides, but Wednesday’s matchup gives the Red Bulls a chance to close it on the field.
A strong start will be critical. Scoring first would allow New York to dictate the game and potentially force Nashville out of its preferred approach.
With Forsberg playing some of his best soccer of the season and three consecutive home matches ahead, the Red Bulls have an opportunity to build momentum at home.
Against the best team in the conference, however, the Red Bulls will need to be at their best.
If New York can establish its pressure early, capitalize on turnovers and get Forsberg involved in the attacking third, the Red Bulls have a legitimate opportunity to pull off a statement victory at home.
