Gotham FC seeks bounce-back win against last-place Utah Royals

By David Macaulay-Smith

Gotham FC returns to Sports Illustrated Stadium on Saturday night, aiming to steady its playoff push against a Utah Royals side still searching for its first win in more than four months.

Gotham (5-5-6, 20 points) sits in eighth place, holding the final playoff spot despite a 2-1 loss to Houston last weekend. Esther González scored her team-leading 11th goal in that match, but a second-half own goal and a stoppage-time strike from Michelle Alozie handed Gotham a disappointing defeat.

The teams last met on June 13 in Utah, with Gotham winning 3-0. González scored twice, and Jaelin Howell added a goal. The match also featured red cards for Jess Carter and Howell, leaving Gotham short-handed, yet the Bats still secured a convincing victory.

González, who leads the NWSL with 11 goals, along with Sarah Schupansky, the league leader with five assists, and Rose Lavelle, are expected to drive Gotham’s attack. González has been the team’s primary scoring threat, while Schupansky has provided a creative spark from the wings, linking effectively with González. Lavelle is slowly regaining form and has been a bright, creative presence for Gotham, offering vision, ball control and the ability to unlock defenses.

Utah (1-4-11, 7 points) sits bottom of the table and has gone 11 straight matches without a win, dating back to April 18. The Royals managed a 0-0 draw with Angel City last weekend but continue to struggle offensively, scoring just 12 goals this year and conceding 31, the second-most in the league behind the Chicago Stars.

Players to watch for Utah include forwards Bianca St-Georges and Brecken Mozingo, who have combined for half of the Royals’ goals this season. St-Georges has scored three goals in 13 appearances with 2.8 expected goals and 11 shot-creating actions, making her a consistent threat in the final third. Mozingo has also netted three goals in 14 appearances and added 17 shot-creating actions, regularly creating opportunities from wide areas. Midfielder Claudia Zornoza serves as Utah’s creative hub, tallying 1 goal, 1 assist, 29 shot-creating actions, and 3 goal-creating actions across roughly 1,035 minutes, orchestrating much of the Royals’ best build-up play.

A win for Gotham would not only help the Bats climb out of the lower half of the playoff race but also provide a chance to regain confidence after last weekend’s late defeat. For Utah, a positive result could be a rare boost to a struggling campaign and a chance to snap an 11-game winless streak.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET with coverage on ION.
