Gotham FC looks to build on its most complete performance of the season when it travels to face Chicago Stars FC on Wednesday night at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET.
Gotham (2-2-2, 8 points) enters the midweek match coming off a 3-0 win over Bay FC on Saturday, a result that delivered its first home victory of the 2026 campaign and a needed attacking breakthrough. Rose Lavelle and Esther González scored, while Guro Reiten made her club and NWSL debut in a match Gotham controlled from start to finish.
The performance offered a clear step forward after a mixed opening stretch, with Gotham showing sharper movement in possession and improved finishing in the final third.
With a win Wednesday, Gotham has an opportunity to continue climbing early in the standings and further stabilize its form heading into a congested portion of the schedule.
Chicago (2-4-0, 6 points) returns home after a 2-0 win over Boston Legacy FC, a result that snapped a difficult run and provided a lift heading into a three-game homestand at its new venue. Jordyn Huitema opened the scoring, and Nádia Gomes added the second to secure Chicago’s second win of the season.
The Stars will be aiming to string together consecutive positive results for the first time this year as they try to find consistency in the attacking phase.
Wednesday marks Gotham’s third road match of the season and its first visit to Chicago’s new home stadium.
Gotham has controlled the series in recent years, entering unbeaten in its last six meetings with Chicago (4-0-2) and outscoring the Stars 9-4 during that stretch. Chicago, however, enters with a refreshed attacking group and will look to challenge that recent trend on home soil.
Assistant coach Shaun Harris said the focus remains on maintaining tempo and execution following Saturday’s win.
“Keeping that ball speed, utilizing the spaces in between the units, and making sure we can get from one side to the other,” Harris said. “Recognizing when they’re jumping and penetrating behind. The last point is getting the ball in the back of the net.”
He also emphasized the importance of managing recovery during a congested schedule.
“We’ve got a really good performance team and nutrition team that take care of every detail,” Harris said. “We tweak training slightly and manage players so they can go again on Wednesday and then again on Sunday.”
Midfielder Savannah McCaskill said the win over Bay FC was a key step in restoring confidence after early-season struggles in front of goal.
“It was really important for us,” McCaskill said. “We struggled the first five games to put the ball in the back of the net, so scoring three goals was really important. The performance itself was really good and we want to carry that confidence forward.”
She added that the quick turnaround leaves little time to celebrate but aligns with the team’s expectations.
“That’s our standard, that’s how we want to play,” McCaskill said. “Midweek games are hard, and we’re going to need everyone.”
Looking ahead to Chicago, McCaskill pointed to controlling tempo as a key to success.
“We want to dictate play and tempo, play one and two-touch football, and connect passes through the lines,” McCaskill said. “Defensively, we have to deal with their direct balls and be quick in the counter press.”
Following Wednesday’s match, Gotham continues a demanding early-season stretch that will test squad depth and consistency as it looks to turn improved attacking performances into sustained momentum in the NWSL season.
