How the PWHL Expansion Affected the New York Sirens

By Adriana Leone

On June 9, the PWHL expansion draft was held, completing the rosters of the two new teams: Vancouver and Seattle.
Let’s take a look at the Sirens players who will have new homes for the 2025–26 season.

Signing period

PWHL Vancouver and Seattle were given an exclusive five-day signing period, during which they could each sign up to five unprotected players. Each of the original six teams were allowed to protect three players, and then a fourth after losing two unprotected players. The Sirens chose to protect Micah Zandee-Hart, Sarah Fillier, Ella Shelton and Maja Nylén Persson.

While New York lost only forward Alex Carpenter and goaltender Corinne Schroeder to Seattle during the signing period, those players arguably represented the heart of the team.

Carpenter was the player the Sirens could rely on in big moments. Need a game-winning goal? Carpenter was there. Need a clutch play? Once again, she delivered. In two seasons with New York, she recorded 43 points. Many fans were shocked she wasn’t among the team’s protected players.

Schroeder is widely considered one of the best goaltenders in the PWHL. Most nights, she gave the Sirens a chance to stay in games with critical saves. In 35 appearances, she posted a 2.42 goals-against average and five shutouts.

Expansion draft

During the expansion draft, Seattle and Vancouver each selected seven players to build their 12-player rosters. Since New York lost two players during the signing period, the team could lose only two more in the draft.

Forward Jessie Eldridge was selected with the sixth overall pick by Seattle. Eldridge filled several roles for New York over the past two seasons and had recently cemented her place on the top line. She tallied 38 points in 54 games as a Siren.

Forward Gabby Rosenthal was taken with the ninth pick by Vancouver. The Sirens drafted Rosenthal 19th overall in 2024. She recorded just four points in 29 games last season but has strong breakout potential. During her senior year at Ohio State, she averaged more than a point per game, with 37 points in 35 games.

There are major questions surrounding the Sirens’ current roster and some big roles to fill. New York will aim to rebuild during the upcoming draft later this month — especially since the team holds the first overall pick once again.
