Gotham FC has traded defender Lilly Reale to Boston Legacy FC in exchange for $350,000 in allocation money and $50,000 in intraleague transfer funds, ending the young defender’s short but successful spell with the club.
Reale leaves Gotham after arriving ahead of the 2025 season and quickly becoming an important piece of the club’s back line during a historic campaign. The former UCLA standout appeared in every regular-season match during her rookie year and played a major role as Gotham captured both the 2025 NWSL Championship and the 2024-25 Concacaf W Champions Cup.
Her performances throughout that debut season quickly established her as one of the top young defenders in the league. At the end of the year, Reale was named NWSL Rookie of the Year before later earning U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year honors, capping off a remarkable first professional season.
“Lilly has been an important part of our club since joining Gotham FC last season,” Gotham president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West said in a statement. “She has made significant contributions to our success on and off the field, and we are grateful for everything she has brought to Gotham. We wish her all the best moving forward.”
While losing a player of Reale’s quality is significant, the move itself is far from surprising.
The 22-year-old had recently found opportunities harder to come by following Gotham’s acquisition of former Chelsea FC Women winger Guro Reiten, who has since been deployed at Reale’s position, left back.
Since returning from lower leg and foot injuries, Reale’s minutes had noticeably dropped. Across her last six appearances for the Bats, she logged just 168 total minutes, averaging only 28 minutes per match as competition for places intensified.
From Reale’s perspective, the move offers an opportunity for a fresh start. A native of Hingham, Massachusetts, the defender now heads closer to home and should immediately become a central figure for Boston Legacy FC as the expansion side prepares for its inaugural season.
In total, Reale made 44 appearances and 33 starts across all competitions during her time with Gotham while also earning her first senior call-up to the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT), where she has already collected nine caps.
For Gotham, the move creates valuable roster flexibility, with the $350,000 in allocation money remaining available through the 2027 season under current league rules.
For Reale, it feels like the right move at the right time — a chance for more consistent minutes, a larger role, and an opportunity to help build something new back home in Boston.
