Mets’ Juan Soto Named Five-Time NL All-Star Starter
Juan Soto was voted a National League All-Star starter for the 2026 Midsummer Classic, capturing 17 percent of the overall outfield vote and finishing second among NL outfielders behind Brandon Marsh of the Phillies and the Dodgers’ Andy Pages.

It is his fifth All-Star selection, his second start, and his first representing the Mets, making him the only player in this year’s field to have earned the honor with four different organizations.
The numbers behind the selection are straightforward and significant.
Soto enters the break slashing .290/.405/.559 with 21 home runs, 51 RBI, and a .967 OPS that leads every hitter in the National League.
Production at this level, sustained without consistent lineup protection and through his own IL stints earlier in the season, reflects a hitter whose output is self-generated rather than situationally inflated.
Generationally (and Granularly) Elite
What separates Soto from virtually every other elite hitter in the game is not just the production he generates but the active process by which he maintains and refines it.
In late May, Soto identified a specific deficiency in his two-strike approach and made a deliberate equipment adjustment to address it.
He began testing a bat with a thicker, more prominent knob, which shifts the bottom hand’s contact point and distributes the bat’s mass more evenly from handle to barrel rather than concentrating it toward the end.
The result is a bat that is marginally heavier by total weight but meaningfully faster through the zone – a counterintuitive outcome that experienced hitters understand because end-loaded bats generate drag through the swing path that an evenly distributed bat does not.

Soto was already performing at an elite level before it, but it reflects the kind of granular self-awareness that defines generational hitters.
Most players at this production level do not voluntarily introduce mechanical variables mid-season. Soto introduced one specifically to sharpen his most reliable asset – his two-strike approach – and the results have validated the decision.

To consider the historical framing around Soto at 27 years old has become genuinely difficult to contextualize without leaning on all-time company.
He holds multiple MLB age-related records, most notably passing Mickey Mantle (668) to become the all-time leader in walks before turning 26. He also holds the record for the most seasons with at least 25 home runs and 125 walks through a player’s first seven MLB seasons.

He reached 250 career home runs in May, and his on-base percentage still leads the National League. In true Philly fashion, he “hasn’t even begun to peak,” when compared to the game’s foundational names, not era-adjusted approximations.
Always Looking to Improve
He went to the Mets’ pitching lab during spring training in 2025, underwent a full mechanical evaluation with then pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, and was put on a daily throwing program designed specifically for his outfield application. What followed was an investment in his throwing mechanics that reflects the kind of professional accountability that separates good players from exceptional ones.
When he identified that he was still cutting the ball rather than getting fully behind it after several months of work, Hefner and then outfield coach Antoan Richardson gave him a specially marked baseball – a tool typically used with pitchers to confirm proper spin and release – which Soto now incorporates into his between-inning warm-ups routinely.
The outcome has been a measurable improvement in throwing efficiency and a more reliable arm profile from the left side of the outfield.
The Mets Have a Leader in Soto
The positional transition to left field was informed by the organizational plan to develop Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing on the right side of the outfield – having also accelerated his communication role with the two rookies, as they look to him as a leader and a glue.
Soto’s second year in this organization has produced a comfort level and institutional familiarity that has allowed him to take an increasingly active role in outfield positioning and real-time decision-making.
He is directing traffic on balls in the gap, setting alignment pre-pitch based on his read of the count and pitcher tendencies, and providing immediate feedback to two players still developing their major-league outfield instincts. That is a substantive contribution to this team’s defensive infrastructure that does not show up in any individual metric.
Five-Time All-Star
Soto will start at Citizens Bank Park on July 14th for the All-Star Game. He is the Mets’ lone representative in a year where the organization has given its fanbase very little to celebrate.
The vote totals – driven in part by a significant showing from Dominican Republic fans and Mets supporters who turned out in meaningful numbers – reflect the genuine connection Soto has built with this market in year two of his tenure.
Interim manager Andy Green noted after the selection that sustaining NL OPS leadership on a team that has not played winning baseball around him is what defines the accomplishment.
