The Sirens won in overtime 3-2 against the Montreal Victoire in a must win game.
The Sirens came into the game 4-10-4 and faced the first-place Montreal Victoire, looking for a win and a positive being winless since Jan. 27.
In the first period, the Sirens came out with intention as they put a ton of pressure on Montreal in their own zone, gaining more control time and shots in close to pressure. Montreal’s goaltender, Ann-Renee Desbiens, faced 11 shots, with one of those going in off a tip from Abby Roque, giving the Sirens a well-deserved lead. The Sirens also had a penalty shot from Elizabeth Giguere, which was unsuccessful, ending the period with the Sirens up 1-0 and only letting up five shots in the process.
The beginning of the second brought more action. Montreal came out strong on the forecheck. Not even two minutes in Montreal’s Maureen Murphy corralled her own rebound in front of the Sirens net to tie up the game 1-1 with the assist coming from Lina Ljungblom.
While the Sirens took a step back offensively in the period they were able to take back the period midway through the second when Sarah Fillier put the trash away grabbing a backhand shot that was loose in front of the net that pushed the score into 2-1 through 12:25 in the second. Sirens goalie Corinne Schroeder stood tall making multiple saves in front during period facing almost double the shots she faced in the first. The Sirens, despite being up 2-1, only had four shots on goal with the Victoire having 16 shots for the period.
The third period started with a much more balanced offense for both sides. The Sirens put up more offense in the first four minutes of the third period than all of the previous period. At 14:50 Sarah Fillier took a five minute major for a hit to the head putting the Sirens short handed trying to protect an important lead. Montreal capitalized on the power play, tying the game at two on a score by Kati Tabin off of a one timer assist by Erin Ambrose.
The Sirens were able to kill off the rest of the penalty only giving up that one goal but the Victoire still carried their momentum and continued their pressure. The rest of the period was a back and forth battle but to no avail as both teams ended the period without getting the tie breaking game winner as the game went into overtime.
The Sirens went to overtime and beat the Victoire on a one timer on a power play breaking the nine-game losing streak since their last win on Jan. 27. The goal was scored by Maja Nylen Persson.
