Esther González has emerged as the cornerstone of NJ/NY Gotham FC’s 2025 season and one of the most influential players in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Leading the league with 10 goals in 13 appearances, the Spanish forward has proven indispensable to her team’s offensive efforts.
González accounts for more than half of Gotham’s total goals this season, contributing 55.6 percent of the team’s 18 goals. Without her, Gotham’s scoring average of 1.38 goals per game would drop to roughly 0.6, a figure characteristic of the league’s least productive offenses. This level of individual contribution is rare in the NWSL, where scoring tends to be more evenly spread among teammates.
Her efficiency in front of goal is remarkable. Averaging 0.79 goals per 90 minutes, González ranks among the top three percent of forwards in the league. While her expected goals (xG) per 90 minutes stand at 0.48, she has outperformed that mark by converting 10 goals from an expected total of 6.1 across 1,136 minutes. This overperformance underscores her clinical finishing ability, as she consistently turns limited chances into goals. González’s shot selection and composure inside the box have made her a lethal threat, often capitalizing on half-chances other forwards might miss.
Beyond scoring, González is integral to Gotham’s offensive build-up. She has contributed 1.1 expected assists (xA), along with 24 shot-creating actions and four goal-creating actions, demonstrating her involvement in creating opportunities for teammates. Her ability to drop deep and link play adds an additional layer to Gotham’s attack, allowing the team to maintain possession and transition effectively from midfield to the final third.
The team’s results reveal a stark contrast depending on González’s scoring. When she finds the net, Gotham holds a record of four wins, one draw, and one loss, averaging 2.17 points per game. Conversely, in matches where she does not score, the team has struggled, with just one win, two draws, and four losses, averaging 0.71 points per game. This disparity illustrates how closely Gotham’s fortunes are tied to her production and raises concerns about the team’s offensive depth.
Defensively, Gotham has been solid, conceding only 13 goals and recording five clean sheets so far this season. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger has been a key contributor, earning four of those clean sheets, while the defensive unit as a whole has helped maintain the team’s strong record at the back. However, Gotham’s creative output remains limited. No other player has scored more than two goals this season, and the team’s leading assist providers, Sarah Schupansky and Gabi Portilho, who have contributed four and two assists, respectively, have yet to influence the final third consistently.
As it stands, Gotham FC is in eighth place in the NWSL table with 18 points through 13 matches. This heavy reliance on González presents both a strength and a vulnerability. While her goal-scoring prowess is a formidable asset, Gotham’s dependence on a single player makes the team susceptible to challenges such as injuries, tight marking by opponents, or potential dips in form. Opposing teams are increasingly focusing their defensive strategies on containing González, knowing that limiting her chances significantly hampers Gotham’s offensive threat.
Currently positioned just outside the playoff spots, Gotham faces a narrow margin for error in a tightly contested league. In such a competitive environment, González’s ability to convert scarce opportunities into decisive goals may prove pivotal to the team’s postseason aspirations. The NWSL’s increasing parity means that individual brilliance often makes the difference between playoff qualification and disappointment.
If González sustains her exceptional form, Gotham FC will remain a legitimate contender for a playoff berth. Should her production decline, the team’s path forward becomes significantly more uncertain. Ultimately, González’s goal-scoring prowess may well define Gotham’s season, making her not only their leading scorer but the linchpin of their playoff hopes.
