Freshly ranked No. 22, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights men’s soccer team took to the sky and traveled across the nation to compete against the University of Washington Huskies, who ranked just outside the top-25 (as of the United Soccer Coaches Poll from September 22, 2026). Although the teams were well within sufficient range of positions to indicate a fairly even match, the final result of the game that played out on Sept. 25, 2026, at Husky Soccer Stadium in Seattle was 4-1 in favor of the West Coast school.
The outcome has allowed Washington to leapfrog Rutgers in the current Big Ten standings, with the Huskies now sitting in third, only behind Indiana and Michigan State. They now boast a record of 3-1 in the Big Ten compared to the Scarlet Knights’ record of 2-1, who have played one fewer conference game. Rutgers is now tied for fourth with Northwestern with a total of six points.
The theme of this match was efficiency, and that was evident from one statistic in particular: shots. Both Rutgers and Washington barraged their opposing keepers, Stockton Short and Raffeal De Leon Ponce, respectively, with the former facing a total of 12 shots and the latter an overwhelming 16.
Though shots in general are not the best statistic to gauge the effectiveness of opportunities, shots on target are, as those are the only chances that lead to potential goal-scoring opportunities. Of those total shots, the two sides were nearly even for shots on target, with Rutgers having seven compared to Washington’s eight; this would elude to the fact that the score would be extremely close, but as the concluding score line shows, this was not the case. The two most influential factors in the contest were the aforementioned goalkeepers, as De Leon Ponce had a save efficiency of 50 percent, meaning half of the eight shots he faced went in, leading to four Washington goals. On the contrary, Short saved six of the seven goal-bound shots; although not maintaining a clean sheet, he definitely has a claim for man-of-the-match by allowing his team to complete the game with a three-goal margin of victory.
Another player who could certainly argue his masterclass on the field suggests he was the outstanding performer on the night was Washington’s Zach Ramsey. The midfielder for Washington tallied up two goals and one assist for the Huskies, meaning his contributions alone accounted for the three-goal cushion his side had over their East Coast opponents. These 90 minutes were a microcosm of the season for the talented midfielder who, up until this point through ten matches, had registered 12 goals and four assists, now bringing those up to 14 and five. He has been one of the best players for Washington thus far and is putting in his best effort to ensure his team retains the NCAA National Championship title that they claimed last year.
The match saw Zach Ramsey open up the scoring in the 25th minute. Rutgers ’ Nick Collins would commit a foul in the box just a short while later, allowing Zach Ramsey to earn his brace from the penalty spot in just the 30th minute. The game would enter halftime with Washington up 2-0, but Rutgers sought to fight back. After the game resumed, Zach Mastrodimos scored a goal in the 68th, breathing life into the Scarlet Knights’ hope that a comeback might be in the cards; however, that would unfortunately never come to fruition. Washington snuffed out any hope of a dramatic resurgence and was able to return to their comfortable two-goal lead in the 78th minute thanks to an Osato Enabulele attempt finding the back of the net. To cap off both the match and his stellar night, Zach Ramsey provided the assist for Alex Hall to confirm the Huskies would be 4-1 victors over the Scarlet Knights.
Interestingly enough, in every one of their wins, the Huskies have scored four goals, quite a remarkable achievement. Washington will look to carry this momentum of taking down yet another ranked opponent this season into their matchup with Wisconsin on Friday. Rutgers, alternatively, will need to ensure that their efficiency in front of the net is improved upon when they take on Northwestern on the same day. This game, similar to the one that just played out, will have massive standing implications, as the two are currently level in the standings, as previously stated.
