Cam York Scores Only Goal, Sends Philadelphia Flyers to Second Round

By Mackenzie Connick

The Philadelphia Flyers are heading to Round Two of the Stanley Cup Playoffs! On Wednesday night, they took on the Pittsburgh Penguins in Philadelphia for game six. The game was scoreless through regulation, with Cam York scoring the overtime winner.

After going up three games to none, the Flyers lost two, allowing the Penguins to drag them back to Pittsburgh and send them home again for the sixth meeting.

Dan Vladar stopped 42 shots on goal in the deciding game, earning his second shutout of the playoffs. York hadn’t scored a goal in quite some time—his last goal coming on January 21—scoring when it mattered most.

The team took only two penalties in the game: Jamie Drysdale sitting for two minutes for interference and Luke Glendening sitting for slashing. The Flyers also missed two power play opportunities.

The Flyers played an extremely physical game on Wednesday night, earning 45 registered hits and showing a lot of grit for such a young team. Grit that they will need to face the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round.

The game was scoreless through regulation, though both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh had prime opportunities. Vladar and Arturs Silovs played fantastically. Overtime saw great chances for both teams. Notably, Porter Martone had a game-winning opportunity and it is still unclear how the puck didn’t cross the goal line.

At 17:32 into the overtime period, Noah Cates found a lane to Matvei Michkov, who then found York for the game and series winner.

The Philadelphia Flyers will move to the second round for the first time since the 2019-20 season. They are set to face the Carolina Hurricanes with the series starting in Raleigh, North Carolina, date TBD.
