After beginning its title defense with a disciplined road result, Gotham FC returns to Sports Illustrated Stadium on Saturday evening for its 2026 home opener against the North Carolina Courage. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET

The Bats opened the new campaign with a 1–0 victory over expansion side Boston Legacy FC at Gillette Stadium, showing early signs of the structure and composure that defined last season’s championship run. Esther González provided the decisive moment in the 55th minute, reacting quickest to a loose ball in the box after pressure created by Lilly Reale forced a defensive mistake. Defensively, Gotham delivered a controlled and organized performance to secure the clean sheet. Ann-Katrin Berger anchored the back line with confidence, helping the club collect the first three points of the season.

The Courage arrive with momentum of their own after earning a 2–1 victory over Racing Louisville FC in their season opener. Ashley Sanchez led the way with a brace, including an 86th-minute winner that highlighted North Carolina’s attacking quality.

Historically, the matchup has favored North Carolina, with Gotham holding a (9-13-5) record against the Courage across all competitions. However, the teams split their meetings during the 2025 regular season. Gotham earned a 3–1 victory in the most recent matchup at Sports Illustrated Stadium behind a González brace and a goal from Reale, while North Carolina responded with a 3-2 win in the return fixture in Cary on the final day of the regular season.

Gotham FC will be without several key contributors heading into Saturday’s home opener. Bruninha (hamstring), Mandy Freeman (lower leg), and Midge Purce (thigh) are all ruled out, while Taryn Torres remains sidelined as she recovers from an ACL injury. Guro Reiten will also be unavailable due to an excused absence. Jaedyn Shaw is listed as questionable with a hamstring issue, leaving her status uncertain for the match. Additionally, Mak Whitham remains away on international duty with the United States U-17 national team.

For the North Carolina Courage, Molly Pritchard (upper body) and Olivia Wingate (lower body, season-ending injury) are both unavailable. The Courage enter the match without any players listed as questionable. Manaka Matsukubo will miss the match while on international duty with Japan.

Saturday’s contest presents an early measuring stick for both sides. Gotham will aim to carry its defensive stability and attacking efficiency into its home opener, while North Carolina looks to build on its late-game resilience. With both clubs opening the season with victories, the matchup offers an immediate opportunity to establish momentum in the early stages of the 2026 campaign.
