Gotham FC Signs Kayla Duran to Extension Through 2027

By David Macaulay-Smith

Gotham FC and defender Kayla Duran have agreed to a contract extension through the 2027 season, the club announced Friday.

Duran joined Gotham in July 2025 as a national team replacement player and gradually carved out a role during her rookie campaign. What started as a short-term opportunity turned into meaningful minutes on a team competing for trophies. After initially signing an extension that kept her with the club through the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup, this new two-year deal ensures she remains part of Gotham’s plans moving forward.

“I am so excited to be re-signing with Gotham FC,” Duran said in a statement. “Coming off my rookie season as an NWSL champion, I truly could not have imagined a better start to my professional career. This club and this team mean so much to me, and I’m proud to continue building here and representing Gotham.”

“Kayla has shown great quality in her time at the club so far,” general manager and head of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West said in a statement. “She continues to grow as a player, and we’re excited about the impact she can have for us moving forward.”

Duran made nine regular-season appearances in 2025 and featured off the bench in both the quarterfinal and semifinal during Gotham’s playoff run. In the quarterfinal against top-seeded Kansas City, she played a key role in the decisive sequence. Her header off a free kick from goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger kept the attack alive in extra time and helped spark the game-winning goal.

While she was not a locked-in starter, Duran proved to be a reliable option off the bench, stepping up when called upon without a drop in intensity or composure. She handled playoff minutes, took on tough defensive assignments and showed she could contribute in high-pressure moments. For Gotham, this extension is not just about rewarding a strong rookie season, but about preserving the kind of depth championship teams rely on in a league shaped by injuries, international call-ups and tight margins. Keeping her through 2027 adds stability at the back and ensures the club retains a defender it trusts when the stakes are high.
