Gotham FC Extends Midfielder Sofia Cook Through 2028 Season

By David Macaulay-Smith

Gotham FC midfielder Sofia Cook has signed a contract extension through the 2028 season, the club announced on Monday, further solidifying its young core following its latest championship campaign.

Cook, 21, joined the Bats ahead of the 2025 season and made her NWSL debut May 4 against Chicago. The Long Beach, California, native went on to make 10 appearances during her rookie campaign in league play, contributing to Gotham’s second NWSL Championship in three years.

“I’m grateful to have started my professional career at Gotham and excited for the opportunity to keep developing here,” Cook said. “I’ve learned so much in my first year and can’t wait to keep playing with my amazing teammates and our awesome fans.”

Cook also played a key role in Gotham’s international competitions. She started all four group stage matches in the 2025-26 Concacaf W Champions Cup, helping the club finish second in Group B and advance to the knockout stage for the second straight year. Earlier this month, she played the full 90 minutes in Gotham’s 4-0 victory over AS FAR in the third-place match at the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup in London.

“Sofia is a talented player with a very bright future ahead,” general manager and head of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West said. “We’re excited to continue supporting her development and believe this is an environment where she can really thrive.”

Cook arrived in New Jersey after helping UCLA win the 2022 NCAA national championship alongside Gotham teammate Lilly Reale. She recorded 12 goals and six assists in 56 career matches with the Bruins and earned multiple all-conference honors.

At the international level, Cook has represented the United States at the youth level, including appearances at the 2023 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship and as part of the U.S. team that won the 2018 Concacaf Girls’ U-15 Championship.

With her extension secured, Cook remains part of a growing group of young contributors committed to Gotham’s long-term vision as the club looks to build on its domestic and international success.
