Gotham FC’s backline took another significant blow Friday, as defender Kayla Duran was placed on the season-ending injury list after suffering a torn ACL in her right knee.
The injury occurred during the Bats’ 2-1 road defeat to the Kansas City Current last Saturday. Duran went down in the 13th minute while clutching her knee and was unable to continue, eventually being replaced by captain Tierna Davidson in the 18th minute.
“Our hearts are with Kayla,” said Yael Averbuch West, Gotham FC’s general manager and head of soccer operations. “She will have our full support every step of the way in her recovery, and we know she will return stronger.”
Duran, 26, joined Gotham FC in July last year, and quickly carved out a role as a reliable and versatile option across the backline. Capable of playing both right back and center back, she has made 19 appearances across all competitions for the club. Her performances were rewarded earlier this year with a contract extension that keeps her in Gotham through the 2027 season.
Her absence now leaves the Bats navigating an increasingly thin defensive unit. The club is already without natural right backs Bruninha , who remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, and Mandy Freeman, who continues to recover from a lower leg issue. With all three options unavailable, Gotham currently does not have a fully fit, natural right back on the roster.
The situation is further complicated by the careful reintegration of Davidson, who is working her way back from a torn ACL suffered last March. Although the captain has returned to action, she has yet to fully reestablish herself as a consistent starter, making Duran’s absence even more impactful.
With just over two weeks before Gotham returns to action against Bay FC on April 25, the club will be hoping for positive developments on the injury front. A return to the starting lineup for Davidson, along with potential availability from Bruninha or Freeman, would go a long way in stabilizing a backline that has been stretched thin early in the season.
For now, Gotham faces the challenge of maintaining defensive consistency while dealing with a growing list of absences, a test that could shape the team’s early-season trajectory.
