Kean Women’s Soccer Cruises Past Brooklyn Behind Three First-Half Goals

By David Macaulay-Smith

UNION — Stephanie Monroe recorded a goal and an assist as the Kean University women’s soccer team dominated Brooklyn College, 3-0, in the Joe Colodne Memorial Game on Saturday.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Monroe served a failed clearance back into the box for Danielle Maher. Maher’s header redirected toward Allison Yiu, who finished with a flick into the net to give Kean an early lead.

Kean continued to control the match and doubled its advantage in the 20th minute. The Cougars worked the ball through a series of passes before Maher sent a low cross toward Carly Gleason, who slotted the finish home for her fifth goal of the season to make it 2-0.

Monroe capped the scoring in the 28th minute with a well-struck shot from approximately 35 yards that fizzed into the top-left corner, giving Kean a three-goal cushion.

The Cougars maintained their control throughout the match, finishing with a 35-4 advantage in shots. Kean had several opportunities to add to its lead but could not convert its chances. The Cougars rotated most of their starters in the second half, giving their freshmen the majority of the playing time as they preserved the clean sheet.

With the win, Kean improved to (4-3) on the season. The Cougars will return to action Monday night when they host Sarah Lawrence at Alumni Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
