The Princeton women’s ice hockey team took the ice at Hobey Baker Rink for the first time this season on October 31 and November 1. To truly welcome new head coach, Courtney Kessel (formerly with the Boston Fleet), and the fans back to Princeton, the team won both of their games over the weekend.

Princeton Earns Overtime Win Against RPI Engineers

The Tigers had an unfortunate start to the game as RPI’s Charlotte Wensley scored just over one minute into the first period. The home team could not immediately bounce back, but did find the equalizer at 11:08 from Captain Issy Wunder, assisted by Mackenzie Alexander and Emerson O’Leary. Wunder is in her senior year and is coming off a fantastic run in her junior season.

Alexander found herself with another assist in the first half of the second period when Rosie Klein found the back of the net. Alexander is only a sophomore and finished last season with 32 assists—she appears to be on track to match that this season. Nina Christoff found the equalizer for RPI a few minutes later.

Early in the third period, Gabby Kim scored a power play goal from Jane Kuehl after RPI’s Naomi Forand took a penalty late in the second for holding.

RPI found the tying goal with 1.6 seconds remaining in regulation from Mia Montanari. Not to be deterred, though, Angelina DiGirolamo took advantage of the power play awarded after a trip by Georgia Bailey, winning the game for the Tigers.

Tigers Dominate Second Period to Win the Weekend

In their second home game against Union on Saturday, the Tigers had an extraordinarily strong second period.

Alexander scored two goals in the second, both assisted by Wunder. The first came only 46 seconds into the frame. The second came on the Tigers’ power play.

Also scoring in the second were Hannah Fetterolf and Kim, both at even strength. Fetterolf assisted on Kim’s goal.

Emma Fulawka scored for Union in the second, finally getting the puck past Uma Corniea after she stopped 13 shots in the first period.

Down three goals, Union took advantage of their power play, with Jill Willis scoring at 4:15.

The Tigers, once again undeterred, scored just over three minutes later to seal the deal—Sawyer Fleming tallying her first career goal.

Overall, it was a solid weekend for the Princeton Tigers women’s ice hockey team. This was a good start to a long home stretch for the team, who will play five more games at Hobey Baker Rink over the next three weekends. The Tigers’ next game is against Clarkson on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m.
