Red Bull New York Travel to Kansas City for First Match at Sporting Park Since 2022

By Ryan Contino

Red Bull New York will look to head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup break with momentum when they travel to Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday night to take on Sporting Kansas City in a matchup between two original Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs.

New York enters the contest at 5-5-4 (19 points), while Sporting KC sits at 3-8-2 (11 points) as both sides prepare for their final league match before the extended summer pause.

Saturday’s meeting marks the 60th all-time regular season matchup between the clubs, with the series perfectly even at 22-22-15. It will also be the Red Bulls’ first trip to Kansas City since 2022 and the first meeting between the two clubs since 2024.

One of the biggest storylines surrounding New York this season has been the emergence of the youngest roster in MLS. Teenagers Matthew Dos Santos, Adri Mehmeti and Julian Hall have all become regular contributors for the Red Bulls, helping energize a squad that continues to develop under pressure.

Hall, now 18 years old, has become one of the league’s breakout young stars. After scoring against Sporting KC in the previous meeting between the clubs as a 16-year-old, Hall now leads New York with 11 goal contributions this season, tallying nine goals and two assists through the opening stretch of the campaign.

Offensively, New York has created chances at one of the highest rates in MLS. The Red Bulls rank second in the league with 79 shots on goal, averaging 5.6 on target per match, while also producing 17 clear-cut scoring chances tied for the fourth-most in the league.

That attacking pressure has translated directly into results. New York remains unbeaten this season when scoring first, a trend they will hope continues against a Sporting KC side that has struggled defensively throughout the year.

Much of the Red Bulls’ creativity flows through midfielder Emil Forsberg, whose ability to dictate tempo and generate chances has made him the centerpiece of New York’s attack. Alongside Forsberg, players such as Jorge Ruvalcaba and Hall have helped fuel the club’s aggressive high-press system with relentless pace and movement in transition.

Set pieces could prove especially important on Saturday. Sporting Kansas City has struggled to defend aerial situations and clear dangerous balls in the box, often conceding quality opportunities from corners and free kicks. New York’s ability to capitalize on those moments may become a deciding factor if the match remains tight.

Sporting KC has also had difficulties generating consistent offense, ranking near the bottom of the league in total shots while converting chances at a low rate. If the Red Bulls can establish an early lead and maintain their defensive shape, they could control the pace of the match and keep pressure on Sporting’s frontline throughout the night.

Following Saturday’s contest, Major League Soccer will pause for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Red Bulls are scheduled to return to league action on July 22 when they face the Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park.
