Gotham FC activated club captain Tierna Davidson off the National Women’s Soccer League’s season-ending injury list, clearing the way for the Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion to return nearly a year after a torn ACL sidelined her for most of the 2025 season.
Davidson, 27, appeared in just three matches last year before suffering the injury in the first half of a scoreless draw at Houston. Gotham went on to win its second NWSL Championship in three years and capture the inaugural Concacaf W Champions Cup, but the injury forced a reshuffling along the back line for much of the season.
Entering her third season with the club and second as captain, Davidson has become a central figure in Gotham’s identity. Her ability to organize the back line, dictate buildup from deep and communicate across phases of play extends her influence well beyond her position on the team sheet.
Gotham’s defense responded impressively in her absence, setting a club record with 10 regular-season shutouts and adding two more in the playoffs. Still, Davidson’s injury removed a layer of tactical flexibility. Comfortable at both center back and left back, Davidson is valued for her ability to build out of the back, break lines with her passing and organize the defensive shape. Her composure under pressure allows Gotham to control tempo from deep positions, and her anticipation often disrupts attacks before they fully develop.
Her return restores not only a starting-caliber defender but also the team’s on-field organizer, the player responsible for setting defensive shape, directing traffic and ensuring collective discipline. For a club chasing sustained success, having its captain fully available adds stability to a roster already proven capable of winning.
Gotham opens the 2026 NWSL season March 14 on the road against expansion side Boston Legacy FC before returning home the following weekend for a ring ceremony and a matchup with the North Carolina Courage.
After a title-winning season without her, Davidson’s return is not about proving value. It is about restoring the backbone of Gotham’s defensive core as the club looks to defend its crown.
