Gotham FC returns to competitive action Friday night with silverware on the line, taking on the Kansas City Current in the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
Friday’s match brings together two of the top clubs in the league, with the Challenge Cup traditionally featuring the reigning NWSL champion against the previous season’s Shield winner in a one-off championship match.
Gotham secured its place after winning the 2025 NWSL Championship, capturing the club’s second league title in three seasons. Kansas City qualified after finishing atop the league standings and claiming the 2025 NWSL Shield.
This will mark Gotham’s third appearance in the Challenge Cup, though the club is still searching for its first title in the competition. Gotham fell to the Portland Thorns in the 2021 final before suffering another defeat against San Diego Wave in the 2024 edition.
The matchup also marks the second time in three seasons Gotham and Kansas City will meet in a tournament final. Their first came in the 2024 NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup final, adding another chapter to what has quickly become one of the league’s growing rivalries.
Friday will be Gotham’s first competitive match since May 31, entering the contest after a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dash prior to the league’s summer break. Kansas City also heads into the final with momentum after earning a 1-0 victory over Boston Legacy FC in its final match before the break.
The contest also serves as a rematch of one of the defining moments in Gotham’s 2025 championship run. The two clubs met in the 2025 NWSL quarterfinals when eighth-seeded Gotham stunned top-seeded Kansas City on the road at CPKC Stadium.
A dramatic extra-time winner from Katie Lampson secured Gotham’s first-ever victory over the Current and sent the club into the semifinals, helping spark the postseason run that ultimately ended with the club lifting another NWSL title.
Head coach Juan Carlos Amorós emphasized the importance of the opportunity ahead, with Gotham chasing the one trophy that has eluded the club.
“It’s a trophy that is important for us, one that we as a club don’t have yet,” Amorós said. “For us, coming to a new place like Columbus, where there isn’t an NWSL team yet, and being able to play in front of the fans is exciting. Hopefully they fall in love with the way we are on the pitch and the way we play.”
Gotham enters the match in a strong position health-wise following the summer break, with several key players returning to team training.
“We’re probably in one of the best places we’ve been,” Amorós said. “Emily Sonnett has started training with the team, Mandy Freeman is with the team, Bruninha is with the team. For us, that’s special because we really depend on everyone, and having everyone available is important. We’re in a good place.”
The biggest challenge Friday will come against a Kansas City side known for its dangerous transition play, something Amorós said his team has spent significant time preparing for.
“It’s a really difficult game because against Kansas City you can feel like you’re in control, and then in any moment you can lose that control because of their transition game,” Amorós said.
“For us it’s about how we occupy the spaces we want to occupy with the ball, making sure our concentration is at the highest level and being effective when we get into the final third. It’s also about our rest defense. Those are aspects we’ve highlighted.”
For Gotham, Friday presents more than just the start of the second half of the season. It offers an opportunity to capture the one domestic trophy still missing from the club’s growing collection and add another chapter to what has already been a golden era for the organization.
